39 ford flathead

4 Attachment(s)
My original 39 ford was running fine with the exception of backfiring on decal, well it stopped running, I have spark, I have fuel, when squirting the carb it fire for two secs, can't keep it running.

While I'm not much of a technical guy, I need to start learning, luck has it this happened in my driveway, now I need help in diagnosing the problem, if I have spark and presumably fuel, then perhaps the carb or the points are the problem?

your wisdom is appreciated,

Ive attached a couple of pics as well for pleasure.:D

Hey -

Where in NJ are you?

I am in Bridgewater - not too far from any place.

If it's running on the squirts it could be that you lost prime on your fuel line/pump.

I had that on my 39 pickup.

The cork gaskets on the sediment bowl are always suspect. Any air in the fuel sediment bowl will break that prime.

Clogged line or aftermarket filter could also be part of the problem.

Let me know..............

Check out your flex hose, may have a small hole you can't see but sucks air. G.M.

Unhook the fuel line at the carb and hold a rag under it. Then crank the engine just a couple of turns to see if the pump is pumping. Make sure the ignition is off. Be careful re-hooking up the gas line. Easy to crossthread and then you have a problem. That is a nice car.

While obviously not able to provide a definitive answer, it may be something to do with the idle circuit or main jets being blocked. If it was the fuel pump, there wouldn't be any fuel in the accelerator pump to give a squirt. Does it keep running if you jiggle the pedal, thereby maintaining a series of short squirts?

Mart.
