It's getting harder to buy stuff on the swap meet as it seems many sellers are unwilling to ship. I've seen many parts I have interest in but no shipping turned me off. Living in the Midwest leaves me without many options. I ship parts several times a week either by UPS or USPS priority. It takes time and materials to box stuff up and deliver it to the drop off place but it's part of selling old parts.

And some of the examples are extreme; there's a seller on ebay with two '33-'34 commercial pitman arms who offers local pickup only and they have gone unsold month after month (duh!). We're talking about a small flat rate box furnished by the Post Office here, folks, not a custom made crate.

I guess people don't want to be bothered and don't really want to sell things. I am happy to ship to a buyer and do it all the time. It's a nuisance and the costs have become so high that it's discouraging. Small items, no problem. Bigger ones are a real effort.

I wonder… For some, it’s not about selling scarce parts for money. One day, a friend will be saddened when you tell him that you sold the part he needed to a stranger.

I'm very fortunate to have both materials from work and local FedEx and USPS at my disposal. i just sent a transmission case out last week with good results, if you set up accounts with both pricing will decrease and this is from somebody that's not into technology. USPS also offers regional shipping boxes that lower costs by a lot compared to their "fits it ships" boxes but you need to set up an account, boxes and account set up free of charge. Same with FedEx, no fee to set up an account.

I sell a few parts now and then. I usually add the cost of shipping to my sales price. If you don't want to ship, don't advertise your parts for sale. I have shipped all over the world. Most buyers know the problems involved with shipping, but they are willing to put up with it if they want the part.

All of the answers are correct. I feel if you advertise you should be willing to ship. Not too many local pickups. I like adding the cost of shipping into the price. saves a lot of back and forth. Sometimes I don't add enough, my fault.

I shipped some parts, two pkgs thru USPS to France last week and both have arrived in France as of this morning. That is faster than I can get something that is whipped from the west coast to here.

I don’t mind shipping anything but large, heavy items. I WILL NOT ship USPS after they recently jerked me around over a $50 insurance claim. If you do use USPS and eventually end up with a rejected claim, search the internet for the PO Consumer Advocate. They are the only human you can speak with, who is in your court and, who will settle your case.

This may just be my area, North Atlanta, but the lines at the post office and UPS Store are always long and slow. I'm looking at a 30-45 minute wait every time I want to ship something out. Luckily my wife has a home business and has the stuff to mail out small stuff, but the big stuff I have to wait in line for.

this is just a quick ups horror story, about a year ago I shipped a ford p/u lift kit from fl. to wisconsin. I had the ups store locally package it and paid $200+ to ship it.They lost it, (package was 6'x2'x2'& approx.150lbs).It took me 6 months to get reimbursed. Their argument: it wasn't packaged right,(they packed it) it finally took a threat of legal action to get them to do the right thing.the upshot: I don't ship ups anymore, but I do ship parts domestically,even large ones usually via grayhound.

Anything I ship l try to get the cheapest price for the buyer. Nobody wants to pay more for shipping than the price of the part. I quit using my local post office because it is manned by idiots. I go to one in the next town where I don't have any problems. I found the only way to get an accurate quote is to take the box to the post office first.

Shipping is all part of helping the customer get the part he wants, and I have made many. new EV8 friends that way. The Fed Ex & USPS account is a good idea. I have had a customer email me the pre-paid Fed Ex shipping labels and schedule the P/Up. My local post will give provide me quote when I verbally tell them the weight, length, width and zip code. Right on the money most of the time. Not a fan of UPS, a friend told a similar story like Tom1948. UPS store packed a shipped it, UPS lost it, blamed poor packing ????

I've shipped parts to Europe and Australia as well as through out the US. Only time I had an issue was with a USPS flat rate box with a pair of flathead pumps going back east. Box was pierced and a pulley was bent. Refunded the buyer's money and filed a claim. Got the $50.00 max claim amount which was what I had in the sale. So in the end the buyer got one good pump and one needing a new pulley for free.

Pay The Price
 

Few folks want to pay what it costs to ship any item …
Not just car parts.
So a level of expectation that is unrealistic has evolved.

If you want to shop around and get free shipping
then wait for the swap meets and do your shopping then.

Sellers of parts are not offering the service of transport …
It is expected of them from buyers who have been accustomed
to low cost - below cost - free shipping offers they see on the Interweb.

I experience this daily with car transport inquiries.
Someone gets a quote from an auto transport broker
and after around 30 days or so when their vehicle hasn’t
been picked up they start calling around.

I use USPS for almost everything I have sold. They never have lost an item. I bought a decent scale and using the USPS web site can figure shipping amount down to the penny. Wish I could say the same for UPS

They won't even deliver to New Zealand or Australia currently so not an option for us . DHL is quick but expensive (but no more so than USPS when they would deliver to us )
