Rear-end oil fill This is an elementary question, please don't laugh. How do you guys fill the rear-end with gear oil? The fill plug points a little down and I tried a flexible funnel,
but trying to get it to flow down hill is difficult where it goes into the fill hole. Maybe a rose gun would work? |
Re: Rear-end oil fill I have used 2 pieces of short 1/2" pipe and elbow with funnel to add lube. The plug hole is 1/2 pipe thread.

Re: Rear-end oil fill old style pump oil can with long flexible end.

Re: Rear-end oil fill The 600W I use comes from Bratton's in a squeeze bottle. I put my finger over the end and guide it into the hole and then squeeze the bottle. It is a fill to spill operation.

Re: Rear-end oil fill A suction gun or rubber hose over squeeze bottle nipple works. Many different ways to milk this cow.

Re: Rear-end oil fill Like Tom said: Fill until it runs out. Fill to spill.

Re: Rear-end oil fill Tom's way is the easiest. But if your heavy differential (or trans) oil didn't come in a squeezable bottle, you can buy one at Menard's, Home Depot, etc. Fill the bottle with a funnel and you're in business.

Re: Rear-end oil fill I use a modified hand-pumped pressurised garden weedkiller spray bottle.

Re: Rear-end oil fill I use a lubricant suction gun similar to this link.

Re: Rear-end oil fill Thank you for the response. What you guys are doing makes sense.

Re: Rear-end oil fill I cut a tin can and folded it into a crude funnel ----it's what i had at the moment

Re: Rear-end oil fill If you use the substitutes for 600w it helps if you warm it up to make it flow out of the bottle better. You can also use one of those cheap oil pumps at Walmart to pump outboard motor gear case oil. It just takes a lot of pumps to fill that old gear case. It won't hurt to add a little Lucas in there too.

Re: Rear-end oil fill I leave my 600w oil in the garage until I think I will need some, then I bring some in the house and use hot water in the sink and let it soak. That seems to work okay.
