Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO The eagerly awaited sequel.
I show some things that may be of particular interest to Barners. I tear the axle apart IN SITU. Just dismantling the left side of the casing. I did it without dismantling the brakes which I didn't realise I could do until I tried it. I bust the hubs loose using the Vintage Precision puller. I share some insights about rear hubs and the puller. I pull the guts of the axle out the one side. I've heard that discussed before but never done it before or seen it done. I pull the carrier apart and find the culprit. Smoking gun identified. Have a look: https://youtu.be/i26ZSqwFIF0 Mart. |

Re: Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO That hub puller was impressive. Never seen one like it and wish I'd had one when I pulled a rear hub on my 39. I used the old crab style 2 (or was it 3?) jaw puller which worked but not easy.

Re: Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO Those hub pullers are wonderful. Have one and, considering the machining required, are very reasonably priced.
Also, great video on the '41 rear axle Mart! Learning more about early Fords. |
Re: Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO Mart, The dolt that had welded that axle should be shot! Let's see the other end, to see the apparent mushroom that prevented it's sliding all the way out in the previous video?

You can see it here. It looks just like the other piece. They ground it down to just a bit over the normal diameter, but not enough to come past the axle casing end.
Mart. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...7&d=1572204253 Edit: what's up with the images? It should be twice as big as that... |
Re: Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO How long were you driving your truck with that repaired axle?
|
Re: Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO Around 18 months. I don't know how long it was driven like that by previous owners though. It had been off the road for a long time when it was imported to the UK and then bought by me. There was no sign of the axle being opened up any time recently.
The repair could have been made 20, 30 or 40 years ago for all I know. The axle has 3.54 gears too, which were not stock so someone must have been in there to fit those. again, no idea how long ago that was. Good question, though. Mart. |
Re: Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO AS a young man, I changed a number of broken axles. Especially when we started to run the Oldsmobile engines. Then I saw an early Ford with a late axle assembly, and never used ine again. Same with the transmissions.

Re: Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO Mart, I subscribed to your channel and have been looking at your videos, getting an education thanks. Is that your T-Bird in the back?, I once had a Shay replica 55 T-Bird, do a search on Shay motors it's interesting.

Good video Mart - thanks for sharing.
I have done that job the hard way as you are doing (laying on the floor all dang day!). Didn't seem to mind when I was 18, hate it now! LOL I've found that it is easier to just pull the whole rear and get it up at working height - actually saves time in the end. Also, it is much easier to check/set pinion preload, backlash and all that gory stuff. You may not need to worry about this stuff (if the rear was setup correctly - which one can ponder - given the welded axle). To help my efforts, I made a plate to mount the rear end on my engine stand - has made my life a LOT better. Attachment 410947 Attachment 410948 |
Re: Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO Hi Vette. yes, I saw that you had subscribed, thanks for that. I remember seeing the Shay replicas. A neat way of getting that T-Bird stylin.
Nice setup there, B&S. I wouldn't try and do a setup job under the car, I agree. For my purposes It worked out really well. Next part is in final stages of editing. Mart. |
Re: Mart's 41 pickup: Broken axle investigation. VIDEO I would love to find one of those axle pullers!
