Coupe Windshield Hinge

Does anyone have a picture of what the windshield hinge looks like, and how it's assembled.

I think I'm missing a piece, or the part that I think could be the hinge is just rusted solid to the windshield frame.

Like as not, it's rusted. I've had to use a small lead or brass hammer to get mine apart. It slides out to the side. The hinge is a piece of steel, rolled into a cylinder that fits inside another rolled or formed semi cylinder. Saturate the joint with a 50/50 mixture of ATF (Auto. Trans Fluid) and acetone. Keep working it and it will loosen.

If you curl up your fingers on both hands and hook them together, that is sort of how the hinge is shaped. As Terry said, it may take some penetrating oil and light tapping to free up the hinge. There are different hinges. What year do you have?

Thank You 1930 Coupe.

The hinge4.jpg picture that you sent looks just like my windshield with the hinge stuck in that exact position.

I'll start working some penetrating oil into it and see if I can free it up.

Thanks again,
Tommy

Tom,
I guess this car is technically a 1931. The frame number is definitely 1931, but it has a '30 radiator shell, and it doesn't have an indented firewall. The splash aprons are 1 long piece ('31 type) and the front fenders match. I believe at least 1 of the front fenders is original. The engine is a replacement, so that doesn't match either.:)
This will be a nice car when its done, but i'm not going to try to win any awards with it.

The windshield will not slide out if the sunvisor is installed. The sunvisor is not easily removed if the soft top is on. In that case I'd remove the vertical wood screws holding the hinge to the wooden header and remove the windshield and hinge as a unit.

This windshield has been sitting in the garage, out of the car since 1970.
It's pretty stuck, but I think i'll be able to free it up. It's going to soak in mystery oil for a few days.

Re: Coupe Windshield Hinge

The upper hinge shown in the photo does not appear to be correct for a '30 coupe. The correct hinge should be bent up at the rear edge 90 degrees to form a channel for the upholstery cardboard that covers the inside of the wood header .

Re: Coupe Windshield Hinge

Sorry, you are correct. What I said is 28-29.

Re: Coupe Windshield Hinge

It took a little work, but the hinge is nice and free now. At the end of the hinge, there is a small portion that was crimped over the windshield part, and was rusted pretty bad so i couldn't really tell. But once I un-crimped it, i was able to slide the 2 pieces apart with some moderate tapping with a hammer.
