Petronix better ? Do their 6v coils really deliver a noticeable umph? Dependable?

Re: Petronix better ? Unless they have made an improvement, their 6v systems were subject to failure with generator voltage spikes. The old fashioned dist. machines will set up a flathead dist. for more RPM than the engine will make.

Re: Petronix better ? Coil will only produce as much voltage as required to jump spark plug gap. Doesn't matter what it says on the coil. Anything over 10K volts is probably OK for a flathead.

Re: Petronix better ? So are you just asking about the coil performance, or do you have the Petronics unit as well? When I bought my '46 Coupe a few years ago, I thought I would go with the electronic ignition. After reading numerous posts on this site as well as the EFV8 site, I decided to stay with the stock setup. I put on a Skip coil and a Bubba rebuilt distributor, and in the three years since startup, the engine starts and runs like Ford built it. When warm, it starts with a touch of the starter button, and has never failed to start.

Re: Petronix better ? Also, there is something very self-satisfying about understanding how all of the mechanical aspects of your vehicle function and being able to keep them maintained in tip-top operating condition.;)

Re: Petronix better ? A coil with a 1.5-ohm primary winding will only step the voltage so far. The reliability is the thing to look for. One built with modern materials should work just fine. Some folks like the Pertronics and some like the Bosch silver coils. NAPA Echlinc coils used to be pretty good too. In this day and age, I couldn't say how reliable any of them are.
