dash questions

2 Attachment(s)
Couple questions on the dash. On the bracket that the dash rest on there was some kind of sealer or something. Do you know what was use and if it is needed? Sound deadener maybe? I have no found anything in the trim manual on this.

On the window frame there are clips that hold the inside molding on. I am missing one of these and have not found any as yet. Can something else be used in its place? Enclosed photos

Re: dash questions

For the L-shaped brackets that the dash sits on, I just cut out a square piece of roofing felt and punched a hole in it for the bolt to go thru. The factory may have used a bit of their seam-sealer between the bracket and dash as an anti-squeak.
The clips are used for holding your windlace in place prior to installing the interior garnish mouldings. To my knowledge, these are not being reproduced by any of the popular repro parts suppliers. Some people are abandoning those clips and using small, short screws with washers to hold the windlace in place. But you gotta drill holes for that and its best to punch out the mating holes in the flat portion of the windlace.

Re: dash questions

What is windlace? I do not recall anything there when I removed the garnish. I may have to try and make one of those clips.

Thanks for the felt idea.

Re: dash questions

Windlace is a piece of fabric folded over a soft foam core giving it its round shape and gets placed around the opening of doors and gives the upholstery a finished look.

Thanks Dobie
May not have had that since it was a sedan delivery and had no interior upholstery to speak of. At least I don't remember any but then again it has been decade since I took it apart.

Re: dash questions

All sedan and wagon models had windlace, even the Mainlines and Couriers.

Re: dash questions

A similar clip is available from the T-Bird suppliers. I used them in my Ranchero. They fit the holes in the sheet metal, are longer but the same height as the originals.

Do you know where you got those? I could not find them at Larrys TBird.

Re: dash questions

Ford used a sealer that is very much like the old Tite-Seal compound (the thicker one). The stuff is called Neil-Seal now. I use the medium weight type P/N N25-66.
