Can someone tell me if the floor was painted on the 1930 Station Wagon


Can anyone send photos of the rear curtain box.

I am no expert, but my understanding is it was a black coating. Not paint, but a black coating somewhere between paint and stain. Not sure what to call it. Let’s see what the experts say!

Sub-frame and floorboards generally finished with a "dull black asphaltum based wood preservative..alternatives Commercial drab finishes,, per Paint and Finish Guide. A rubber matting was most likely utilized also to cover the wooden floor-boards.
On my coupe I mixed linseed oil and a flat black paint and rubbed several coats to get the sheen (or lack of) that I wanted..kb

my 30,000 mile a wagon has black finish on the floors. the curtain pan is a simple affair bolted up under the rear floor..

Asphaltum—that’s the word I was looking for! Not paint, not stain, but black! I kept thinking a form of tar, but knew that wasn’t a good description.

A few years back we installed an overdrive and I just couldn’t cut the original front floorboard so I made a new one. To coat it, I made my own cocktail that turned out well. I used a low gloss clear and ebony stain. A coat of ebony stain, then bit of mixing stain and the matt clear together then applying it—it looks great against the original parts.

I found this one at Hershey 3 years ago?. Original or re-pop I don"t know. If it is an original it is in excellent shape.....So.....

If it is original it looks GREAT, if repo, a great reproduction. I purchased one recently in Michigan and it is in aluminum, but very close to original. I am trying to find out how it was mounted under the rear of the car.

Did the splash guard go under the floor in top of the chassis?

Not sure what you mean by "splash guard". The top of the box mounts to the underside of the floor. The top is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch wider on the sides that form a flange that bolts to the floor. This where the blue clamps are holding it in place in the pic. Bolts come down from top and nuts on the flange side.

The back sill (wood) has a slot cut into the bottom side for the lock to turn into the wood. when it catches the metal box. Hope that makes sense.

The bolts are carriage and the heads can be seen from the top of the floor. I can dig it out of storage in a few days and get better pics and dimensions.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to this post. Here are some specifics about the curtain pan I have.

It measures 30 1/8" wide by 25 1/2" deep on the top of the pan and where it mounts to the underside of the floor.

The bottom of the box is 27 5/8" wide by 23 1/2" deep (where the door mounts).

This leaves a 1 1/4" flange on each side to mount to the floor with 4 bolts (2 on each side). From the edge of the top of the box (where the door is), the holes are spaced 7/8" and 22 1/2".

There are 7 small nail holes along the edge that the door closes toward. In the pic you can see one of the small holes and the latch hole.

The door measures 27 5/8" x 2 11/16" tall and 1 1/8" deep. It has guides on each side to help shut the door in line with the box. The latch is not set in the center of the door/box.

The hinge is a "piano" style hinge spot welded to the box and door.
