Noise at higher RPM? I wish some FordBarn members could hear this in person as I know that is the first suggestion I’ll get, but in the meantime, I am trying to figure out what might be causing the noise you will hear in the video toward the end.
I have owned this car since 2012 and this noise is new. As you will hear in the video... 1. it is not constant and only occurs when the engine is spinning at a pretty good RPM. 2. If I am accelerating or decelerating no noise, only during that point in the pedal when you are basically cruising, like everything has no force on it one way or the other. 3. I am not feeling anything in the pedals, steering well, shifter or the seat of my pants 4. I can get this to occur in the driveway, so not driving, just recorded during driving so you can see that everything sounds pretty good up until that speed. Thoughts? I hate to just drive around at 25 moh for the rest of the time I own this vehicle BTW, original 1936 21 stud flathead motor https://youtu.be/UCqc3T87si0 |
Re: Noise at higher RPM? Try removing belt, drive it and listen for squeal. If it goes away, then either the water pumps or generator. Have you greased the pumps or lubed the generator?

Re: Noise at higher RPM? Kinda sounds like spark knock to me.

Re: Noise at higher RPM? sounds like a big end bearing.

Yup! - The mains.... |

Agreed. And maybe rod bearing noise too for good measure. :( Terry |

Re: Noise at higher RPM? How is the oil pressure holding up. If the mains are that loose, I would be surprised to see over 5 psi at idle or over 25 at speed.
|
Re: Noise at higher RPM? Its time to drain the oil. Check/visually inspect the drained oil for metal particles. Use a magnet to attract any metal particles in the drained oil....

Re: Noise at higher RPM? Had the exact same problem with an 8ba engine. It was suggested that the combination of close piston top to head clearance and the rod bearing "float" under the described driving conditions causes the slightest noise as described. I had the heads domed for slightly more piston clearance. problem solved.

Re: Noise at higher RPM? I see, original motor, perhaps a carbon removal engine treatment additive might help for a start.
|
Re: Noise at higher RPM? Hopefully the engine is an LB - no Babbitt main bearings....
|
Re: Noise at higher RPM? Well you might be right about the carbon build up.
In the original 33 engine it had a carbon build up on the pistons that hit the heads ,I sounded like it had hammers tied to the crankshaft Lawrie |
Re: Noise at higher RPM? Wrist pin possibly?

Re: Noise at higher RPM? I have had rattles kind of like that just due to engine vibration at certain speeds. I have changed and tightened a bunch of things on the body to get rid of it. This was a model A although, they had more resonant frequencies inherent. I could feel it when I once had a rear main knock. Bad rods usually knock when decelerating.

Re: Noise at higher RPM? I agree with others.Sounds like rod big end bearing.
|
Re: Noise at higher RPM? Oil pressure 25 lbs at idle about 40 lbs cruising. Engine running between 165 and 180 degrees, so not overheating either.
Thanks for all the input. |
Re: Noise at higher RPM? I don't think the sky is falling. I think the head mounted water pumps dried out during winter storage. :p

Re: Noise at higher RPM? Are you sure it an engine noise. You can push the clutch in at speed and see if the noise goes away while costing at speed. The noise to me sounds more from inside the car. I had a similar noise and it turned out to be the speedometer. After a little lube it worked fine.

Re: Noise at higher RPM? I was thinking speedometer too. Noticed it was jumping back and fourth about 5 mph.
