34 Ash Tray Radio Head Intallation

My original coupe did not come with an ash tray radio and I am planning on installing one in my dash. Upon looking at my dashboard ash tray opening, there is a piece of sheet metal (integral to the dashboard) that impedes the upper section of the radio head from being placed in the ash tray opening. I'm assuming the function of this sheet metal was to reinforce the ash tray when opening and closing.

Does anyone know how the dealerships approached this problem when they installed radios in the cars being sold. I suppose the brace could be bent up carefully but that might cause some distortion to the dash above the opening. Another option would be cutting the brace off with some snips?
Any comments?

Thanks for your help!

My3window,... I don't know about the problem of mounting the Radio head in the ashtray opening , but if you cut the ashtray bracing .. Use a small electric dremmel rotary tool with a small diamond blade, I have used these with great cutting accuracy in modifying and making small projects .. JMHO ... R.:)

You need to cut the piece that holds the ash tray on the back of the dash off. Then install the radio head.

Is your dash a 33 or 34? The ashtray opening is different on 33 than 34.

Instead of chopping your dash up why not just take a wrench like in the pic and carefully bend the tab up ? The wrench set where it is held the flat so there was no distortion . Pretty sure this is [ bending the tab up ] recommended procedure and took about 15 seconds . The 2 mounting points for the box should be dimpled into your firewall above and straddling the steering column . Just drill them out .

David J is correct. you bend a 34 . 33 will work without bending

Thanks to all who provided input. I bent it up and there was no distortion to the area above the opening. The radio head fits fine now!

Tom,I glad all went well with your radio head, and David J, is right about the drill holes on the firewall,if you have not found them yet, look for two indents about a foot apart, and if I remember right, drill 3/8" holes for the radio T bolts. Hope this helps and take care.E.P.Williams
