Trunklid to tulip panel gap

1 Attachment(s)
'31 Std coupe (45B)
Im using a repop trunklid and it was not drilled for hinges. Whats a good ballpark gap between frt edge of lid and tulip panel.. Ready to drill for hinges and would like to be as correct as possible before drilling. Pictured gap is 1/4" +/-
Seems to be some adjustment on hinges for flush fit up & down ,but not forward and backward to correct gap
Any real experiences appreciated

Re: Trunklid to tulip panel gap

1/8”-3/16” max
Usually the repo deck lid is too wide and rubs on the sides

Re: Trunklid to tulip panel gap

Oldbluoval: Thanks for the info...I thought 1/4" looked a bit wide..so ill tighten it up a bit..
1/8 - 3/16 will be my target
My lid actually fits well on the sides and does not rub..

Looking at your picture when you correct that gap your side to side gap will change allot . Fitting new parts on something 89 years old is a task .

Looking in the November 15, 1929 Body Parts List...here is what the Ford dealer would of seen "back in the day":

For Roadsters it was A-41405 Panel (deck) assembly---Upper;

For all Coupes it was A-47405 Panel (deck) assembly---Upper.

Re: Trunklid to tulip panel gap

It's usually referred to as the panel above the deck lid. Folks always like to attach new terms to shorten or abbreviate long descriptions. Tulip doesn't jump right out and explain why it's called that. It has more than two lips so that doesn't really explain it either. Forgive us old farts for using actual descriptions in reference. This way there is no confusion.

What do they call the panel below the deck lid if I may ask?

"What do they call the panel below the deck lid if I may ask?"

Looks like 28-29 A-47421-AR Panel (deck lower) and 30-31 A-47421-B Panel (deck lower)

Re: Trunklid to tulip panel gap

All this info and comments about the actual name for the panel and only one reply answering my original question... The gap between the _____ ( insert panel name you prefer ) and the upper edge of the trunklid/decklid..I'm having to drill all hinge mount holes and hoping to get them as close as possible....Don't want the lid to rub on the (whatever you prefer) panel , so I'm gonna shoot for 1/8"-3/16" as Oldbluoval kindly recommended

Thanks anyway for all replies...
BTW : I'm an old-timer myself..Turned 78 last November...strating to question my sanity in starting this coupe project...!!!

Re: Trunklid to tulip panel gap

Some of these old cars have had a rough life. Quarter panel damage or rear end damage can get things out of kilter. The other problem mentioned is quality of new replacement parts. They can be close but not close enough. It really helps when you have some old original parts to study. This is the best way to find out what dimensional differences might be.

I have heard of folks having to cut the metal on both right and left edges to reduce the width of parts that didn't fit the original opening. So far, I haven't heard of anyone having to add metal to any edge but then again, anything is possible. Many of the replacement panels below the deck lid have had fit problems over the years. This will affect deck lid fit too. It pays to get the best parts possible. I tend to repair parts before replacing them even if I have to cut them apart to do it. With missing parts, then a person is at the mercy of the supplier.

Your fit dimension 1/8" to 3/16" is pretty close. Ford used gap gauges to check fit and finish during assembly.

Re: Trunklid to tulip panel gap

The Gap top and bottom is usually about 3/16 to 1/4. Always a bear to get the alignment. I've done at least a dozen of them and they always take time. Original hinges help alot. I worked ina English restoration shop and they used the term "Tulip panel" as well as wing, boot and bonnett. (Fender, Trunk lid and Hood)LOL!!

Re: Trunklid to tulip panel gap

The required gap may be controlled by the need for sufficient clearance between the pieces when opening and closing the lid. You don’t want a perfect looking tight gap that will rub off the paint when you open the trunk lid. It take a bit of fitting to get it right, and be sure there is extra space to allow for paint thickness.
