Positioning of outside scroll handles on Fordors and other body types
 

It was brought up in a post a few days ago about the positioning of the four outside scroll door handles on Fordor Sedans and any other body style with those types of handles.

So just what is the correct way?

With the "small ball" part on the end of the handle pointing up OR the "small ball" part on the end of the handle pointing down OR did it not make a difference?

In viewing some original Ford car photos the end of the handle, the "small ball" end, is pointing down.

Any other "original" photos out there showing them pointing up?

My understanding is large ball up is correct. Also the RG&JS 15-12, 15-13 show the handles large ball up.

The small ball at the end of the handle on my Vicky is down. The handles have never been off the car.

I just went through a few dozen era pictures and the small ball is down on all of the Fordors I looked at including at least seven cowl-vent Fordors.

Sorry for the hijack, but I love that hubley model. I have several model a's myself, a Vicky, a woody, and a roadster I believe. I dont think I have a fordor. I really should dig them out of the hole in the basement and do a proper restoration. Plus they were somewhat local to me coming from Lancaster PA.

I read in one of the Restorer series of books that they started out one way early on then changed right to left not long after. Most of this was with the subcontractors (Briggs & Murray) since they are the ones that made all the bodies that used them.

One additional factor that confirms large ball up is correct!!!

If you take a scroll locking door handle, normally on the passenger side, and put the small ball up the handle now become a driver side door handle.

Check out the pictures in reply #13 of the Bonny and Clyde Post. One of the pictures shows the door handles of what I would assume is an original A.

Pluck, I always thought it was "small ball down" until I saw the photos posted by WTSHNN in Post #2 in your thread entitled

"Proof wanted about the 1928 60-A 2-Window Fordor Sedan"

Those photos clearly show "small ball up" on what I think is a 60-A. Car also has an unusual paint scheme with a "third" color on the window reveals and light-colored wheels; and an unusual outside visor over the windshield. As WTSHNN says, these photos may be from the premiere event in December 1927, and so the car may be a proto-type.

Small ball down if done other way the door lock cylinder in S/W cars would be upside down.

The photo at the New York Industrial Exposition is an early example. This is before they changed to the final configuration.

What about the rumble seat handle on a '30 Cabriolet?

On my 1931 68B the door handles are large ball up, and the rumble seat handle in the closed position is shown in the 2nd photo below.

After looking at the rumble seat deck lid handle and thinking about describing the orientation, it is in a vertical installation with the large ball up. And when opening the deck lid the handle operates in the direction of clockwise similar to the door handles.
