Annoying rattle.

My car has an annoying rattle that occurs at slow speed but goes away at highway speed. It's a tinny sounding rattle that sounds like it's coming from under the dash or from the firewall. There really isn;'t anything under the dash or on/around the firewall that I can find that would make such a noise but there it is. I just had the motor/trans out for a rebuild and the did not find anything on the outside of the car or under the floor that would cause it which leads me back to under the dash but there is nothing there but the gas tank. Anyone experience such a rattle and find the source??

I had a nasty sounding rattle when the car was first started that tended to diminish as the car was driven, except on rough roads. It was the windshield frame hitting the stanchion on the passenger side (1931 roadster). Push the windshield open and see if it goes away.

I have a heat shield mounted on the exhaust over the muffler. The rear mount broke and it made a strange noise/resonance until I discovered and repaired it.

I had a rattle that turned out to be the rod in E brake that is activated when you push the button on top to release the e brake. Drove me crazy till I found it as I thought it was dash/firewall/floorboard. Finally I just placed my finger on the button while driving , and no rattle Took it apart and covered with heat shrink tubing. Hope this helps you.

It's not that. My car and my truck both have that one. This one is more tinny sounding.

I had (sometimes have) a rattle from the clips that are riveted to the firewall that the hood supports go into. On one of mine, the rivets have really loosened up and I have to compensate by tightening the hood support rod just right. One of these days I will grind off the rivets and use the rivet-head screws the vendors sell, but it drove me nuts until I found it. Maybe that is your rattle.

Check for loose rivets and loose bolts/nuts.

A club member once told if I hear strange noises coming from my Model A to just “TURN UP THE RADIO “.

Yeah, I have a strange rattle towards the front of the car right now. Sounds like a loose hose clamp or something similar. At idle or driving, rattle is there. Everything is greased. I have no idea at the moment!

If you have engine pans, take a look at where they mount to the oil pan. I once found that one of the ears had cracked from the vibrations, and it caused a rattle.

the flame arrestor in my gas tank works loose and rattles. sounds like it is under the dash.

Re: Annoying rattle.

Reach way under the dash and make sure those clamps that mount the gas tank are tight.
