3/4 or 1 ton -1940

Hello all, my first time asking a question here ( I'm sure there will be lots more). My absolutely beautiful wife surprised me recently with a 1940 pickup, while I'm sure it's a one ton I would like to be positive in my assumption. So my question is what is the difference between a 3/4 and a 1 ton? It has 14 leaf springs and 7 override springs. From what I can find online I know it's one of those two according to the wheelbase. Thanks

Looks like the 3/4 ton was Model 01D or 02D and had 16" wheels.
The one ton was 01Y or 02Y and had 17" wheels.

well I'll be another stake bed! I have a 41 3/4 ton stake bed and a friend had a 39 one ton stake bed. the 3/4 tons had 16" wheels all around like a 39 car wide 5's. One tons had 17" tires/rims on rear called flat base rims. also from what I found the 3/4 tons had wooden stakes on the bed and one tons had metal stakes

thanks for the replies. its got the 17's so my guess was good. it didn't start with a deck, I do have the box but it needs A LOT of work.

Re: 3/4 or 1 ton -1940

tell me again please, what are the wide 5 16" wheels that are a bit wider, and do not have the artillery style center?

Re: 3/4 or 1 ton -1940

the wide fives are like artillery wheels or 36 to 39 car wheels but are wider 5" these were used on 3/4 ton up thru 47

Re: 3/4 or 1 ton -1940

To the uninformed Ford wide fives look like a pre '68 5 lug VW rim. Both have open centers. Some say the easiest way to tell them apart is that you can put your head through the middle of a Ford wide five but not a VW wheel. Welcome to the barn. @expavr here on the Barn has a real nice '40 1 ton. He has a wealth of knowledge about these trucks (as do others here as well)

Your truck is a beauty and it is a Tonner. The Tonner had 14 rear leaf springs. The 3/4 Ton had 13. All 4 rims on the Tonner are 17" in dia. Front brake drums are 12" in dia. Rear drums are 14" in dia. Attached is a photo of my Tonner with the OEM Ford 17" locking ring type rim and Firestone 700:17 bias ply tires shortly after I restored it. To set the record straight I had the centers of a spare set of rims machined out and welded to a radial style rim and put Michelin LT radials on it to improve driveability. This is the setup that you see in Alan's post of the Tonner. Congratulations on your new acquisition and having a loving wife who blessed you with such a gift!!!

And it would be 122" wheelbase. I have three '47 tonner pickups, one is a solid runner, two are fixers and a nice 47 tonner panel. Some of just like the heavy stuff. I like the 8' box. That's a beauty your wife got you! Lucky man for sure!

Many nice larger pickups pictured. Been a fan of the bigger pickups my whole life. Hail to the full- floating axles!
