Horn for a 39 1 ton truck.

Can anyone help with the kind of horn was originally used and mounting location for a 39 1 ton truck?

I have a dealer brochure that might help. Will post what I find after work.

On the frame rail ahead of the steering box. Not 100% sure but look for two smallish like 5/16" holes there.

The green bible calls out P/N 81C-13833 for commercial & truck from 38 thru 41 without bracket. There are different ones for longer wheel base trucks and COE trucks. It has a divergent cone projector and a plain dome cap to cover the vibrator. They look a lot like the ones used post war as well.

Sorry to report the drawing is for the right side, not what's needed. But it is interesting to see a V-8 60h.p. as the engine.

Attached are photos of the horn, horn mounting bracket and their location on the frame of my 40 Tonner. I'll check the Greenbook tomorrow and see if the same setup might have been used in 39.

Thanks very much to all of you!:)
I’ll check my frame to see if it has those bolt holes.

Re: Horn for a 39 1 ton truck.

The Greenbook shows different part numbers for the horn on my 40 Tonner and the horn on your 39 Tonner. It does show the same part number 51A-13823 for the Commercial (1/2 ton) and Truck (3/4 ton up) from 38-39 which suggests that its possible that the same horn used on a 39 pickup would be correct for your Tonner. If you could locate someone with a 39 pickup and take a look at their horn it might give you some idea of what you’re looking for. Good luck with the search. Also welcome to the Barn! Any photos of your truck?

This is the horn that was in my '38 1/2T pickup. Not sure but I believe that the basic horn was used for several different trucks but that the location and the mounts changed. On the 1/2T (commercial) pickup the horn hung under the front crossmember, on others they were fastened to the top of the frame rails.

Re: Horn for a 39 1 ton truck.

The green bible only lists the replacement parts that were used in the 1948 time frame. The 51T number is a 1945 number that has a 41A (221 cid) engine size connotation which is kind or rare for post war. Most vehicles made starting in 1945 had the 239 cid connotation of 59A. The prewar number up through 1941 was 81C-13833. This number comes from the 1938 thru 41 chassis parts catalog. It would have been for the 1/2 ton up through 1-ton with the correct bracket to install it. The brackets are listed separately.

That's the only thing bad about the green bible is that it doesn't give the old numbers unless they never changed. If they changed then the number changed too. Ford started production of trucks early in 1945 and they may have had 221 engines in them to start out with (41A block). The 1945 trucks were the first civilian vehicles made so that farmers could replace their war weary vehicles. Automobile production started later on July 3, 1945.

I took 38Bill's suggestion and checked the front crossmember, and sure enough there are 2 holes that correspond to the holes on the horn I have.

I bolted it in place, and it fits, although it's pretty close to the lower pulley (about 1/4"). seems a bit tight, but I drove around, and didn't notice any issues, so I'm thinking this is correct.

Thanks again for all the help!!!

expavr,
you asked about photos of my truck.
Here are a few. I'm concentrating on getting it running well, not planning to do to much on the body. for now I'm appreciating the well worn look.

That's a great lookin' truck; I don't see a thing wrong with it's appearance. I'll bet it's quite useful, too.:)

“Well worn look”??? That truck looks great ! The bed mounted tool box with the Early Ford logo is the frosting on the cake. Congratulations.

Re: Horn for a 39 1 ton truck.

That is one beautiful truck. And a factory stakebed to boot. I'm going to the Portland Or swap meet in a month. I always have my eyes peeled for ford tonner stuff. Sometimes I see tonner hubcaps and there isn't a lot of demand for them so they can be reasonable from hubcap guys. Just so great to see another ford one ton on the road. Two big thumbs up!

Thanks for the kind words
It’s inspirational to see all your beautiful trucks as well.

GB Sisson,
I actually have the hubcaps, but I am looking to replace some of the damaged hubcap mounting clips.
Does anyone know of they are reproduced, or available as NOS?

Re: Horn for a 39 1 ton truck.

Barnfind08 here on the Barn might have clips. Don't know if the clips are the same or similar to the hubcap clips on a wide 5 wheel but if they are Drake has them as repops, unless of course they are out of stock.

My '39 1/2ton has two holes on the driver's side frame but not on an angle. My wiring harness(built by Tyree Harris comes out of the loom underneath and mid radiator. That is where I mounted my horns.
