The Ace Mechanic Again

So here's my latest adventure. Took the seats out of the roadster and delivered them to a friend of a friend to be upholstered. He told me he would have them back to me in three weeks, my friend told me that means three months, well it turns out it was a bit more. but look good and fit well. I had bought new cession spring from Snyder's. As it had been a while with no running the state of the battery came into question and when I got into the car it started on the first revolution which it usually does. So off to the hospital up on the hill to get an E-ray. Seems my bladder is the size of a walnut and the prostate the size of a grapefruit which is backwards, but not unheard of. Anyway pull into the parking lot and find the remaining parking space is pointed downhill just off the entrance driveway. I dash in and get the E-ray and return to my vehicle, so far fine, now the test. Get, turn things on and step on the starter, thunk. Do it again and nothing. So now I have to push the roadster out of the parking space and turn it a bit to aim it out of the driveway. Walk to the front and proceed with the plan, car has obviously gained weight during the Corona virus and I have lost muscle mass, but I manage to get it moving a few inches when a nice young guy ask it I need some help. I thank him and with what breath I have left explain that I will appreciate if he would steer it so as to aim it out the driveway and than I can roll down to the hill and be on my way. We do that and as I walk up to the drivers door, he backs off and the car is now free to roll off down to he driveway and I leap on the running board to steer it toward said driveway instead of the row of parked cars it is headed for. Once around the corner I have very little time to get into the car before it will come to a very significant drop in elevation, so I decide will shove it in gear before getting in so as to stop it and give myself time. I reach in an yank it into first, the engine immediately starts and almost throws me off my perch, so now I have a plan B. Pull the emergency brake and shut the key off, neither off which did a lot to slow the car and resulted in a near mortal wound to my right arm as I finally got into the drivers seat and stepped on the brake to bring thing into my control for what seemed like the first time in twenty minutes, but luckily I was in the car, it was running and I was short of the significant incline by several feet. I waved, "Thanks" to my new found friend, who was standing paralyzed in the driveway, watch in old fool well on his way to certain death. I wish I could have taken a picture of the total astonished look on his face, but all is well that ends well. I got home, washed the blood off my new upholstery and put a charger on the battery, took the alternator off today and installed the original generator so I'm awaiting another adventure to break up the boredome we all are experiencing.

Most of us have been there but too proud to admit it. My biggest boner was disconnecting the drive shaft on my F150 when it was up on ramps--no wheel blocks. Truck came down, running board scraped my stomach as the front wheel brushed the side of my head. Heck yes I knew what would happen, having it in park was useless. This happened on a Saturday evening after a long week of working overtime. I was tired and not thinking.

My prostate surgeon told me I had the largest prostate he had ever seen I was unsure if I should be happy about this ,maybe international fame and in the "Book of Records" talk shows etc etc . Anyway the upshot was I had to have a "turp" or a "holep" or suffer from kidney damage eventually . The surgeon chose the "holep" which was a complete success and now I can pxxx like a factory girl !!! (but standing up) I think we all have near misses in our beloved model As my son and I were out in his 31 coupe visiting my daughter in Bath we were decending a steep hill and the brakes suddenly suffered from terminal fade ,no brakes. Operator error not being in low gear and not paying attention . I grabbed the emergency brake (this was indeed an emergency ) and desperate crash into 1st gear got us back in control . (the transmission survived) Very luckily clear intersections and no oncoming traffic it could have ended very badly thats for sure .

John in a sunny morning (there has to be a catch somewhere) Suffolk County England .

ACE I feel your pain, it's not fun chasing a car, glad all is ok?

BUT next time someone younger offers to help take them up on the offer.......let them do the hard work. You need to stand back or sit down behind the wheel and allow them. I know it's hard to let them I'am still learning ! And with me it's hard to ask for help.

The murder, sex and intrigue is all in the book I wrote. "From the Shadows of Coyote Mountain." http://bit.ly/FromtheShadows Try cut and paste in your browser, lot's of folks have told they that they thoroughly enjoyed it. Or go to Amazon and check it out under the title of David K. Mc Arthur, I think you can probably read it for free on a Kindle, or buy a used book,

Someone asked about cranking with the crank handle. Frankly I didn't give that a try. It is only a Police head, but I'm losing strength and haven't been able to hand crank this engine nor the one in my coupe, to start them. I should have tried it as it was warm and has several thousands of mile since I last tried it. The coupe has 94 psi in all four holes and is tough to pull around even for timing, but this one had only 65 psi when I got it from the builder, then I added the 5.5 head and never have checked it. Surely no near to the 94 in the coupe. I have no clue what that head was as it was on when I received the car and has never been off.

Hi Davey, do you remember I got your coyote mountain book from you at Reno?
It was a great read, and you have reminded me to get it back from my oldest son and read it again.
That was a good pizza Fordbarn meeting you organised at Reno too.
It pulled in several celebrities along with the hoi polloi like me.
I recall Doug Linden, JimCannon, Terry Burtz, - and you of course!
Not to ignore other Fordbarn stalwarts who came. Your names are all down in Diane's diary too

Re: The Ace Mechanic Again

Well Ace, at least you drove home. I have a 29 CCPU that i have been working on for 18 months. Finally got it running, front brakes (no back ones yet) and decided to give it a short test drive. Went 1 mile in one direction, turned around to come home and 1/3 mile from home the truck dies. Dead. Starter is fine, battery is fine, fuel is fine but no start. Like an idiot I have no tools. I walk home (son's actually since that is where I keep the car) and get him to help tow it home.. How to tow it? His car has no hitch and is new. Nope. Mine ha
s a failing transmission. Nope. He suggests his John Deere "Tractor" - an L100 riding lawn mower to be exact. Well, you do what you gotta do. Do you know how embarrassing it is to be towed at 3 mph by your son who is taking selfies of himself driving the lawn mower towing the 29 CCPU? I will never live this down.

It looks like we have more than one Ace. That’s hilarious.
