Crankshaft pulley

Is there a difference between the solid crankshaft pulleys and the ones that have the 3 holes in them? Did certain years come with certain pulleys?

Re: Crankshaft pulley

All original pullies were one piece cast iron with 3 "holes in them".

Aftermarket "Billet" pulleys have no holes in them. I have a couple, including one of the dampers made in New Zealand.

Steer clear of the zinc die cast pulleys. Most are likely two piece. The spoked hub solid cast iron is original but there are many reproductions out there of all types.

What are your thoughts on the harmonic dampener pulleys?

So far -- So good! I had to change the pulley anyway, so I reasoned "Why Not?" I've never had a problem fitting fan belts that others have reported.

I have one and the smoothness of the motor was immediately improved.

Synchro...do you have a counterweighted crank, because I do?

I first put the balancer on an engine without a counterweighted crank - immediate and noticeable improvement. Later, I switched it to an engine with a counterbalanced crank. The improvement wasn't as pronounced but it was there. It's now on the latter engine where it has been for about 60,000 hard miles. I'm attributing the excellent life I have had out of that engine in part, to the harmonic balancer.
PS By life out of that engine, I mean life out of that rebuild. There will be more to come. It's only 0.060" oversize in the bores.

Synchro... Where did you order it? How did you get the old one off? I am thinking a couple 2-4s under it and give it a light tap. How did you get the new one on without damaging the thrust on the babbit inside? They say putting it on with an impact gun can strip the bolt hole....?

Now that my 12 month wannty is up, I sure would like to add one. I am hoping that this is THE LAST ENGINE I will ever have to put in my A. I have a bundle of money in the thing.

It looks like I will have problems for sure.

These balancers are available from the maker in New Zealand. From my rather poor memory, his name is Murray. Look at post 5 on this thread https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...monic+balancer
The only downside to fitting one of these is that changing the fan belt can be a bit of a chore because they are thicker.
