Model A brake question

To get hydraulic brakes on the front & rear axles of the Model A what year did that start?

Re: Model A brake question

Ford started using hydraulic brakes in1939. People started replacing the mechanicals soon after wrecked cars were available in the junk yards. There are kits available now, Kling's is one supplier.

Re: Model A brake question

I recently looked into changing over to hydraulics but ended up rebuilding my mechanical brakes. Here are some good sources, Cling's (as mentioned above), Boling Brothers/MT Products, Snyder's Antique Auto Parts. Snyder's sells Boling kits. I feel the Boling kit is the best bet. It is straight forward and uses the self energizing brake parts. If you try collect the original era parts, you will spend a lot of money, do a lot of modifications and end up with non self energizing hydraulics. Also, Boling sells partial kits if you want to do this in stages.
For what it is worth.

You can source bendix style ford brake backing plates to '48, and piece a kit together if you want, save some money. If you build your own be sure you are savvy with making double flare brake lines, thats where most leaks occur.

I wanted to add that the '46-'48 brakes are easier to adjust. Also if you are using wire wheels remember to run wheel adapters (https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...=1#post1286293) and make sure that if there are balance weights on the drums they don't interfere with the rims.
