Model codes used in Green Book
 

Hi, I'm new to the forum having just purchased a 1953 F100 from Texas. It's original right down to 6 vdc electrical system. I look forward to rebuilding the 8RT engine and replacing safety-related parts: focusing on the steering, brakes and some suspension bits and pieces.

Right now I'm curious about model numbers and hope someone will explain them. From the green book I see descriptions like Models C, D, Y, T, TH listed with parts and as part of the caption on a drawing. This is in the later volume. Thanks!

Not sure about the "Green Bible" using those Model Symbol Codes, my Nov. '50 edition doesn't. I know these were used in the 1948 to 1956 Ford Truck Parts book.
C=F100
D=F250
Y=F350
T=F500
TH=F600

Thanks - that's just what I needed. Not sure what the 2nd letter means (TH) at this point but sure it will become clear with time.

Starting on page 744 of the 1928 to 1948 parts book, there is a basic model identification listing for the year groupings that tell you what each part number prefix stands for. For anything after 1948 you will need the Truck Parts Chassis Catalog for at least the year that you have. I think the first bonus built truck year grouping started in 1948 so you would need a catalog that includes at least 1948 through 53 to cover your truck. I have one from 1948 to 55 but I think the grouping stopped with 1956 then they started a new grouping for 1957 & later trucks.

Here is a picture of my truck. Original down to 6 vdc and I'm sure some of the grime on the undercarriage is circa 1953.

Nice 53 truck! Once you understand the Ford parts numbering system it is a wonderful way to see what parts will interchange through the years. Ford didn't change the part number if the part didn't change so you will find parts on modern cars with B- or 18- parts numbers listed.

On a sad side note, I was talking with a parts counter guy at the Ford dealer who said they were scrapping the old system and going to something new. Probably has to do with computers and databases. It probably doesn't matter because few people can work on a new car.
