28-29 lower firewall clearance notch at throttle linkage pivot

4 Attachment(s)
Anyone know why the firewall clearance notch is not aligned with the throttle linkage pivot ? if the notch was moved over 3/4" it would be in the right location. Or is this really a 28 firewall with 29 or later throttle linkage pivot ?
Both of my cars have this same misalignment.
Back story on both cars is they have been assembled with parts collected, so manufacture date of some parts is anyone's guess.
Also a photo of each car in original condition when I got them.

Try a different throttle linkage.

I took this when I first brought my 29 ccpu home.

Looks about the same as yours.

Maybe that's the way they were?

Luckily I had a 28 linkage in the box-o-parts. Comparing the 28 with later style, it appeared this would not solve the problem because the pivot is in the same relative position to the mounting hole. However, after installing the 28, the solution revealed itself. The 28 foot throttle shaft fits in the center of the notch ! I did not know this until now. This 28 linkage might be the only one I have owned that was not all bent up by somebody trying to pull the motor without unbolting the linkage first.

Re: 28-29 lower firewall clearance notch at throttle linkage pivot

Looking in the Judging Standards (1-17) I see what you mean. The earlier assemblies had the foot rod more vertical, instead of having that curve that engaged the hand throttle linkage.

I have no doubt that mine was bent, probably many times.

I know I had trouble getting full throttle travel due to the foot pedal shaft interfering with it's surroundings.

Very interesting!

Maybe the firewall cutout never got modified after the linkage was re-designed.

The Service Bulletins page 337, April 1929, mention the new control assembly design.

No mention is made of the firewall cutout/notch.

A closeup view of the notch in the 29 roadster reveals a worn spot where a 28 style foot throttle shaft makes contact. The gas tank section of the firewall from this body has stamped date of 7-6-28 (I swapped gas tanks with the other car). The rear body cross subrail below the deck lid did not have the 3 nutplates for mounting a 28 cast tail light bracket, which I always assumed was one of the major change between 28 & 29 along with outside door handles. Perhaps I should have researched all of the running changes made before I got this car titled as a 1929.
I may be going out on a limb here, but 1929 pickups would have been using up parts that were obsolete for passenger cars, which would explain the redundant notch.
