What Does This Overdrive Tranny Fit?
 

Hello All -

I haven't posted in quite awhile, but I do need some assistance. I have an overdrive tranny with the case stamped 8M-7222. I found that model number online in one chat-room and it was associated with a 1952 F1 pickup. Can anyone confirm/deny if that's what it came out of. What else might it have come out of? Here's a photo:

And 51, the shift arms are for a Hurst type aftermarket shifter.

My 51 Merc didn't have that tranny with the bell on it.

Late 1950 thru 52 pickups( column shift ) did not have an overdrive tranny available ( nor 48-50 ). The 53-54 years did, but not with the 8CM 7222 shift tower. It was marked TAAA 7222-A . Same part was used on the L/D regular trans. for 53-54. That's a car trans, not truck.

Any flathead from 32 to 53 with the right bell housing and clutch.

The arms are wrong for a Mercury. OEM Mercury arms are riveted on. I'd have to see the input shaft to see whether it is a 1 3/8"-10-spline or a 1"-10-spline. 1 3/8" could be Merc or F1. The Arms could have been changed. the Lock out switch is 50/51. The early ones were actuated by the lock out rod and the later ones by a ball bearing seated in a taper on the lock out rod.

Original question - what does it fit? Old Ron nailed it. If you want to know what it CAME from, then the 'Merc' answers apply. BTW, the '8' in the case number refers to a part number that was released for production in 1948, and the 'M' is for Mercury. At least I think that is correct. If not, someone here will correct me.

The attached photos are: 1. Rebuilt 49 Merc O/D with the OEM shift arms. 2. O/D trans with modified shift tower-bench test 3. O/D Trans with modified shift tower in the 40 Tonner. Like Martin suggests your trans has some sort of aftermarket shift arms. Also it looks like the O/D lockout arm is mounted upside down. It should be pointed down.

I'm with Ron on the top shift conversion. Very nicely done. Appears to be a four speed truck shift tower. I'd like to know more as well. Ray

Expaver has posted pics & info for this mod before. The 4-speed shift tower is bolted to the top of the trans using a fabricated plate to bolt it to the inspection port at the front and the OD housing bolts at the rear. He fabricated the sliding plates that do the shifting through some clamp on shift levers similar to the ones in Wayneyadas pics. This would be a good way to have a top shift BW electric OD transmission.

The comment about '50-52 Ford pickup not having an OD trans is not correct.
In 1952 my father bought a new top of the line '52 F1 V8 Ford pickup. The trans was a 3 spd column with OD.
I probably drove that truck in excess 20k throughout many of the western states. I loved that truck, was probably the best pickup my dad ever had.
Dad traded the '52 in on a new '54 6 cylinder F1, it was a piece of junk, hated that truck. It was totaled in an accident in Nevada in '55, fortunately I was not driving it..
One of the pickups on my "bucket list" is a '52 Ford F1 V8 w/OD, fully equipped, in the same dark green color as my Dads....

Both of my 51 Mercs have the early type. From all the info I've found so far, FoMoCo used the early bell type transmissions until early February 1951 when they finally ran out. The Late 51 types are pretty much the same as the 51 Ford trans with the 4-bolt mount up pattern.
