Power window repair
 

Anyone know if sluggish power window motors can be repaired/ cleaned up? If so can you recommend someone? I’m in Portland Oregon so local would be great but beggars can’t be choosers. Do they require periodic oiling? This is for a 55 crown Vic. Thanks- Christoper

have you lubed the track and moving parts.may not be the answer but it may be they need lubed I use white grease.if it does need motor they are available

I too have a 55 Crown Vic. I have removed and disassembled my window motors several times over the years. Used to live on a dirt road so they got pretty cruddy. The brushes and armature can get dirty and glazed, the bearings dry and for some reason no end play in armature. I have removed a washer on end of armature to get a little end play. Also, clean and lube the window mechanism to reduce load on window. When I converted to 12 volts about 3 years ago, I found some 12 volt motors from a junked 58 T-Bird and used them. Don't over oil the bearings but they need some lube. I use engine oil. Ben

Yes, they can be cleaned up/repaired. You might check local auto electric shops that repair starters, alternators, etc. They may only need to be squirted with some electrical contact cleaner. Also check that all harness connections in the system are clean and tight. I'm assuming your car is still on 6v. A word of caution if you convert to 12V later: keep appendages away from the windows when raising them. 6V window motors operate 2X as fast on 12V and with a fair amount of force.

I completely disassembled and cleaned and re greased the track and regulator. The motor sometimes squeaks in one direction, is a lot slower going up and just generally doesn't perform as well as the others. I' losing patience with it lol. I guess i'll remove the motor again and try to disassemble it.

The only other thing i can think of is that maybe i didn't re tension the spring enough when reassembling the regulator - i mean the spring that helps give the upward motion a little boost. But even before i disassemble it is still went up muccchhhhh slower than it went down so this seems unlikely.

And i am on 6 volts but have no reason to change it. It runs great! Could you be more specific about the lubricant? Do you mean you use like 10W-30? or?? Thanks!

10-30 is fine. You are probably talking about a rear window since they have a harder time going up than door windows. If a door window, check the adjustments to make sure the window isn't jamming into the front channel when going up. I resisted changing to 12 v for 53 years but when I did a body off frame restore a few years ago I changed to the 12 v. Ordered new relays that were about $5 each and rated higher than the originals. I came across some 6 volt power window motors this summer. From an estate where the widow claimed her late husband rebuilt them. They all work nicely. I had a difficult time finding info on how to wire them, but finally did. Pictures posted are in Community-Pictures part of this board. I have 6 of the longer harness(approx 24") and 3 of the short harness(approx 9"). This is my first post.

6 Volt Window Motor Bench Test


Recently had to bench test some 55 Ford/ Mercury Power Window Motors.
I found 2 different ways of wiring them. 6 volt positive ground system.
This is the first way:
Black wire always to + ground
Red to – negative
Connect Green and Yellow together
This will spin motor in 1 direction

To spin motor in opposite direction:
Black wire always to + ground
Yellow wire to – negative
Connect green and red together.

This wiring is for the 4 wire motors with terminal ends and approximately 2 foot wiring harness coming from motor.

I was recently told that the long wire motors are the heater blower motors for 1939-1948 Ford vehicles.
