Help engine stalls
 

I need some advice. I recently purchased a 29 Open cab pickup with a Model B engine, Zenith Model A carburetor.
The idle is good, I reset it yesterday, rest the timing just to be sure. After starting, with a warm engine the engine stalls when trying to accelerate past 25 MPH, the GAV is set from a half to a full turn CCW.

The only way to get it to accelerate past 25 is to hold the choke out half way and then the engine will accelerate.

I am suspecting all the usual suspects like coil, condenser, but I think this time it is definitely a fuel related problem. According to the previous owner the carb was rebuilt about eight years ago and the car parked since then.

Should I be thinking about rebuilding the carburetor? Please advise

I'm also thinking it's fuel related and you need to rebuild the carb, but I like to do the easy checks first. Hold the coil wire 1/4" from a head nut and make sure it has a good blue spark. A weak spark can limit the speed.

make sure your fuel cap is vented and main jet is clear

as well as mentioned above also check for good gas flow from the tank if you have any additional filters or blockages it could impede the gas flow,do you have an air filter? also check the screen in the carb and let us know your progress.

After 8 years of sitting, just keep it SIMPLE, overhaul/clean the carb & I'll betcha' problem solved!----Bill W.

Sounds to me as though you have a varnish problem. A couple tanks of strong doses of a fuel system cleaner like Sea-Foam or B12 may help, or, a good carburetor cleaning.

Thanks for the help Ford Barners. I took it a step at a time. Strained the fuel through a coffee filter, pulled the carb screen, and cleaned out the fuel bowl. Also pulled the fuel connection to check fuel flow.
Rechecked the timing, a checked the coil for spark. The spark wasn't quite as strong as I thought it should be and it wasn't a blue spark either. Bought a new coil and condenser and as I was removing the old coil one of the wires broke off.
The wiring was pretty old and brittle, so I fixed the wiring and stuck on the new coil for good measure. End of story the car runs great now and I can get to full throttle without any hesitation. The old adage is still true, ninety percent of fuel problems are electrical.
