1940 mercury torque tube.
 

My friend here in Scotland has got hold of a 1940 mercury coupe, it is missing a rear axle and torque tube.
Would a 1946/48 Ford torque tube / driveshaft be the right length?
I know the simple answer is try it and see, but he is 150 mile round trip from us and my cousin and I are trying to identify and assemble the right parts from assorted Ford rear ends we have before we make the trip.

If my memory serves me right, and I am not too sure of it these days, the 39-40 Mercury torque tube looks like it has about a 5-6 inch "spacer" near the center. Very obvious.

The Mercury pinion is an extension of the one-piece drive shaft.
You'll need the whole Mercury drive shaft and torque tube, otherwise there'll be some fabrication in your future...

I suggest the 46-8 is the same .I have a 39 Merc ,they are 116 wheel base same as 46 ford . The early merc. drive shafts were one piece but the latter and 40 were 2 piece same as 46. The early Merc. housings did use the 112 39 Ford tube with a piece welded in the centre to lengen them to 116. So what you have should work.
