Starter switch

First I’d like to say my cars at my vacation home and I can’t try any advice for a week or two.
My car doesn’t start. The starter won’t turn over. I rocked it and jacked it up turned the wheels and don’t think the benix is stuck.
The starter rod seems to have lost its spring. I can tell by the dirty mark on the rod, and by pushing on the rod.
All volts with key on and off look good.
My questions are. Should there be a rubber grommet where the rod goes through the body. If my bendix was stuck in the ring gear wouldn’t I have heard that when it last ran. If the starter plate was fused to the starter button wouldn’t the starter keep turning. And last is it possible my starter plate cracked and broke.

Re: Starter switch

I had a similar problem some time back. It ended to be a loose connection at the starter switch. I disconnected the cable at the battery, disconnected the cable at the starter switch, removed the starter switch, disassembled the switch, cleaned the contacts and reassembled everything. It worked fine after that. Make sure you disconnect the negative cable from the battery before you do anything. Things are crowded around the switch. You don't want to short out the terminal with your wrench.

4.yes

As mentioned, just remove the switch and take a look.

Just to make sure the bendix isn't stuck, try the hand crank.

Put it in third and push it to see if the engine rotates. If it won’t, push like hell backwards until you hear it free up. Don’t push forward. Good luck

My starter rod has no spring. I would think that has nothing to do with the bendix stuck

Maybe don’t push forward?

Re: Starter switch

When the starter switch wears out the paper fiber insulator on the end of the starter rod the bronze contact will jam against the copper terminal on the starter and short out.
I made a video on rebuilding the starter switch.

Had similar problem…..erratic on/off battery connection. Good with voltage meter, NG under starter draw.

First, take your switch apart and check. Then, pull your starter and bench test. I use thick jumper cables and a good battery.
