Engine runs on

1 Attachment(s)
All of a sudden the ign key won't shut off the engine. I Ohm the sw terminals and they show that the on/off function of the sw works OK. Anybody got an idea where I should look?

If you disconnect one wire from the sw, does it still run?

Re: Engine runs on

Check the switch again. There may be an intermittent issue. The clue is "all of a sudden." I am assuming that this is a modern switch and not the original pop out variety. Maybe the contacts are sticking and when you ohm tested they had unstuck. If it happens again, try disconnecting a wire like Chuck said and if the engine continues to run trace out the voltage source with a volt meter or test light.

Are you running an original popout or a modern switch? Makes a difference. Also, are you running a stock generator or an alternator?

When the engine "continues to run" is it running smoothly or just "chug, chug"? Will it take gas if you step on the pedal when the key is off?

Re: Engine runs on

Are you using you a alternator? The GM alternator has a nasty habit of feeding back, causing the run-on.

The only thing in the way is the switch. It goes between coil and points. So you either replace the switch or spray some cleaner thru it. I had to spray the heck out of mine a few years ago.

I have only seen that happen on "newer" cars and Hot Rods that have an indicator (idiot) light. Most of the time it is the fault of the way the car was wired, not the alternator. Still not fun, cure is to add a diode.

Re: Engine runs on

what did you change just before the all of a sudden?

Re: Engine runs on

The system is 12v with a Delco alt. I have swapped out my new 12v coil with the old 12v coil, no change.

Just ordered a new basic ign sw, even tho old one shows on/off works. So we'll see what the new sw does for me.
It has new points, plugs @.022 and cond.
I disconnect one wire from sw and engine died so I ordered a new sw, make sense?
