Re: Engine rattles

When people don't put a good coat of grease on the cam plunger, it will squeak for quite a while. I started an engine that someone else rebuilt, and I did several short runs to warm it up and let it cool down. After about a couple hours run time the squeak finally quit. I like to put a coat of Mystik JT-6 High Temp grease all over the timing gears, plunger, and cam lobes.

Who rebuilt the engine, and can you pinpoint the rattle to some part of the engine by using a stethoscope? Loose rods and loose pistons can rattle. I'd assume a rebuilt engine doesn't have a two piece timing gear with a loose aluminum center.

Re: Engine rattles

is this being started on a test stand or in the car?

If its in the car are you 100% sure its from the engine itself and not some sheetmetal somewhere?

Is it from the passenger side oil pan area, carb, distributor area, front of engine, rear of engine, drivers side oil pan, starter, generator, belt too loose, paint on the crank pulley, waterpump?

if you low idle it as slow as it will go does the squeak seem to follow the crankshaft RPM or is it faster?

Does pushing the clutch in and out change anything about the squeak?

Need some more info to point us towards a solution...

If h & h rebuilt the engine, the problem is theirs not yours. Let them figure it out. Wayne

Re: Engine rattles

Do you know any good local mechanic that could listen to the engine?

It sounds like you have the engine in the car, so make sure the pulley isn't rubbing the frame, and make sure the front motor mount isn't squeaking on the crossmember. I like to squirt oil there to be sure. Otherwise a dry camshaft plunger is still my first bet for the squeak.

Also try it with the belt off as Mitch mentioned. I've heard lots of squeaking belts over the years.

Re: Engine rattles

I once had a rattle coming from the front of the engine ; it was the water pump.

Re: Engine rattles

This might not help, but once I had loud rattling and vibration noise that drove me crazy, I finally found the problem, which was 2 loose radiator brace rods.
