flywheel and oil pan question

I have a fresh 39-41 Merc block with the factory relief. Stock cam, but bored to 3-5/16 and a Merc 4" crank. Question is what flywheel can be used and can I use the 2 piece 59A style pan? Can I use the 8ba flywheel or will it need to be the one that is the same style but a little thicker. No idea what the motor will be going into. I want the motor as complete as possible before selling. Thanks and Merry Christmas to all. Bill

Re: flywheel and oil pan question

The early motors require the early flywheel due to starter placement in the pan/bell. 8BA family is different starter placement but the crankshaft bolt up will work for either flywheel in either block. You can use any 59 series pan on the 99A or later pre-war 239 blocks since they are basicaly the same. A relieved block was probably in a truck. I don't think they relieved the Merc blocks but who knows!

Re: flywheel and oil pan question

The 39 to 41 Mercury block was factory relieved. If I read you correctly if I use the 59A style two piece pan I should use the 59A flywheel?

I was pretty sure that was the way but getting old an need to be sure. The only correct flywheel I have is for 11 inch so I will get it redrilled for a 10. Many thanks and Merry Christmas to all.

The Merc crank will drop into 39 -41 block, use 39-41 main bearings, use the 59ab aluminum top main rope seal retainer, use the special aluminum seal retainer in main cap, you can get the rear retainer at a lot of places like Joe's Antique Auto Mass Ma, 1-800-508 3980 You should grind a little reliefe about 1in, long and 1/8 deep on the bottom of cyl so rod nut don't hit bottom of cyl. You have to use 32-48 flywheel, Not 8BA, I would have that 11in wheel redrilled down to 9in. Use 8BA rods and bearings. Have complet engine balanced. Merry Christmas. hope fat man comes down the chimmy. Walt

Re: flywheel and oil pan question

The motor is already built. Just needed confirmation on the flywheel and pan. Thanks
