1951 ford f-5 troubleshooting Hey iv got a 1951 ford f-5 with a 239 flathead V8.
It starts very well but won't run for long maybe 30min at idle or 5min on the road then it stalls out.My best guess is fuel problem or bad generator. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sent from my LM-Q910 using Tapatalk |
Re: 1951 ford f-5 troubleshooting How would a bad generator cause it to stall out?
Does the battery go dead? Does the ammeter show no charge? |
Re: 1951 ford f-5 troubleshooting Start with a full check of the fuel system: tank to carb.
What happens after 30 minutes? Does it restart? |
Re: 1951 ford f-5 troubleshooting The gage on the dash says the battery is good but who knows if it's accurate. If I throw it on the charger and start it again in a few minutes it's fine again.

Re: 1951 ford f-5 troubleshooting The gage on the dash doesn’t tell you the battery condition, it tells if the generator is working.

Re: 1951 ford f-5 troubleshooting 1 Attachment(s)
Sounds a lot like a coil or condenser issue. Another thing to check is a fuel tank that is not vented. An easy test is to remove the gas cap and see what happens.
If the battery is going low in that short of a time, then that would be an issue as well. A fully charged battery should be able to run an ignition for a while. Check the battery voltage as one way to estimate the state of charge. |
Re: 1951 ford f-5 troubleshooting When it quits do you have a good spark from the coil wire to ground. The
spark should jump over a 1/4". |
Re: 1951 ford f-5 troubleshooting Haven't checked spark yet I'm going to try and run it with out the gas cap as suggested by JSeery.
