40 ford emergency brake cable removal help I just picked up set of 40 ford rear backing plates. There is a small piece of parking brake cable on the inside of the backing plate i cannot remove. is there a trick or tip to getting this out?
thanks chris. |
Re: 40 ford emergency brake cable removal help Is the cable still attached to the actuating lever? If it isn't and the cable has been cut, you should be able to pull it out toward the rear of the car if mounted. If this isn't the case please explain a bit more but best to post a picture.

All you should have to do is remove the clip with pliers that I circled and the cut cable can be pulled or pushed out either way. |

There's a little spring steel clip inside the drum at the end of the E-Brake cable that needs to be removed in order to pull the E Brake cable out thru the E-Brake cable tube. Be sure to save that little clip. If needed, you can make one out of the steel banding used on shipping crates.

Within that tube (if my hunch is correct) is a collection of debris causing the cable to stick. You'll need to work at the debris and little by little, while the debris is dislodged, the cable will be able to be removed. It's a tedious task but very doable with patience. I have run a small diameter (1/8") drill down each end of the tube to aid the removal of debris. |

You'll get it and then be amazed at how much "junk" was in that tube. |
Re: 40 ford emergency brake cable removal help Last rusted in cable I had; I clamped it to a 1/4" bolt with a cable clamp and pulled it with a slide hammer. Lots of rust build up had it really held tight in the tube.
