Any one ever taken there A off roading?
 

Has any one ever taken there As off roading or am i the only lunitc i found she did excellent these are taken up on my mountain property in Freedom NH some of the trails i went down my jeep has had trouble on but the A did fine. I stopped up there a about a month and a half ago on my little road trip to Canada.

The look on the face of the owner of the stuck 4x4 is priceless as you go through the deeper sand to get around him in the pine barrens.

I often think about my little countrys old roads and early motoring. I guess back then, that sort of terrain was the norm, so nearly all use before the 50s was mostly off road.
Now days, maybe we baby old cars more, but they can still cut it. I'll bet more than a few here have got their cars dirty.

We often go off road in our A.
here we are out looking for an old gold mine.

in the 60s when I lived in Idaho
my A was my only car
i used to take it across the barren lava flats hunting rabbits
3-4 guys no roads,no trails,i would just head out across the sagebrush never had a flat or breakdown
i dont think a jeep had enough clearance to go where i went
i still have the car

When I was a kid on the farm we had a 28 fordor that had the body cut off behind the cowl, but retained the floor and all fenders and runningboards. We drove it everywhere, and learned to come out of skids in the snow and mud, and took it fishing deep in the woods at night, when the cops were asleep. It would go anywhere.

Does going across the yard count ?? My old stuff lives in the upper barn and I have to drive up and around thru the yard where I can feel the frame flex..

Screw the looks of 4x4 guys a had also hit up a few other trails along the way the look on the dirt bikers was priceless

When I moved the car from Medford to my house dad took her for a spin 'cross country'. There are large plots that are just weeds in the development so dad decided to go through the dirt to the street behind the house.

I thought it was neat until I rememberered that I just put $800 in tires on the car and there is debris in these fields. She made it through alright as I knew she would, I just did not want to have to fix the tires.

I suspect in 1928 there were many parts of the country that still would not have been considered off-road driving.

Not for show cars or trailer queens, but probably the most fun that you can have with a model A !!! Here is Purdy Swoft at the throttle of the September 29, Walt Dawg holding on . I've enjoyed riding log roads and trails since I was a teenager . I feel like this is more like some of the roads back in the day . Actually the tall 21 and 19 inch Allstate knobby tires are better for trail use . If I get stuck useing the 15 inch tires, we can just pick the back up and set it over on firm ground. I like running fenderless on trails, it is easy to watch wheel placement . Thin wheels and great ground clearance, very good to walk on roads with mud...

My first A was a '31 SW Town Sedan, purchased strictly for grouse hunting in the northern MN. woods. That was long before ATV/fourwheelers, but we went plenty of places you couldnt' get to any other way, besides walking.
Tire chains on the '19's that I never took off.

Years ago while visiting our cabin at Twain Harte CA,we decided to take our 31 Cabriolet for a drive.With our 2 daughters and our Samoyed in the rumble seat,we set out for the back roads.... My wife whom spent her summers in Twain Harte thought she knew of a good"Model A " road. This was nothing more than a dirt path in and among trees and other wild shrubs. As the path got narrow and rough, and no place to turn around, we kept going ever so slow as we were going over very large granite rocks that we discovered was a dry creek bed. Eventually we came upon a very high berm of about 20 or 30 feet high. When we reached the top and came upon level ground ...we were in a very busy picnic area... some guy shouted out "SOME FOLKS WILL DO ANYTHING TO AVOID THE ENTRANCE FEE !!" My wife was most embarrased to have guided us into the Lyons Lake picnic area through the back forrest!

You are not alone, more than once my 31 pickup went off road, off path, off trail, etc. In California we have boulders and chapparal so dense that it can stop a car in its tracks. Definately requires a front bumper to save the radiator. :D:D:D
