8BA oil canister bolts Hi guys, what size are the mounting bolts that mount the bypass oil canister to the head?

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts The early 8BA filter was attached by head bolts. On later 8BA engines (possibly some late 1949) and 1950 and up the filter was attached directly to the head by three cadmium-plated bolts. They were 3/8"-16, 3/4 inch long. There were also 3/8" lockwashers.

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts Are you sure? I thought they were 5/16"; I better go look at my car!

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts Heck, I'm pretty sure you are correct, Tubman. I shouldn't trust the chassis parts catalog.

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts 7 Attachment(s)
Yup. 5/16 is the size. If you install heads that don't have the mounting holes for the 5/16 bolts you can use longer bolt studs that will accomodate the base of your redesigned and modified (5/16 " inch ) filter base. However you also then have to modify your oil lines to fit.

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts Here's an odd thing. 8BA Edmunds heads have the provision for the three filter mounting bolts, but they are not in the same location as the stock heads. I had to do something similar to mount my filter on them.

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts [QUOTE=V8COOPMAN;2005737]The new "Edelbrocks" have 'em too, as seen here on "Heard's" new engine for his '35 pick-up! DD
My Offy heads have same provision in same location. Probably the preformed oil lines I got for the filter fit the stock heads as I’ll have to tweet them to fit where the canister mounts on the Offy’s. Thx all for the bolt size info! |
Re: 8BA oil canister bolts On my Offy head the 5/16-18 falls in & 3/8-16 just starts 1 thread & binds? Can’t imagine but could it be Metric? Doesn’t make sense as other mounting features like for thermostat housings & other are 5/16-18 & thread easily. Mount holes for oil filter are clean? Puzzled & don’t wanna maniac the threads.

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts Going to hardware store to get Metric size & check

Re: 8BA oil canister bolts Lets us know what you find out. I'd hate to see Offenhauser succumb to this. I bought a set of stainless headers off eBay for a ridiculous price. The headers were fine, but they came with metric bolts.
Coop, I'm not really clear on what you are saying. Both sets of heads have the provision for the mounting bolts, but do they have the correct spacing (pattern)? I have a set of new in the box 25 year old Offenhauser heads. I think I'll check those out of idle curiosity. |
Re: 8BA oil canister bolts Was not metric tried a 10 mm which seemed closest in size. Barely to didn’t even start. Went back to 3/8-16 to 1-1.5 threads hand tightened then w a ratchet went very carefully tightened & was tight but didn’t feel crossed. Interference fit. Maybe they used a dull tap, maybe wanted interference fit. All three were are tight but tightened correctly.

I guess I lacked a whole lot of clarity with MY statements. The pattern on the two examples I posted APPEARS to match the stock pattern that Jim (19Fordy) showed with the Merc head, especially with reference to the two adjacent head-bolt holes.
