Starter Bendix

What are the differences between the Model T and Model A starter bendix. I have a B model engine with a 12 volt starter. It got jammed and I had to remove the starter bolts to get the gear to retract. I noticed that my bendix unit had the spiral screw shaft to return the gear. In all the parts books the replacement bendix units for Model A has a smooth shaft and an additional spring to send the gear aft.

Which type is OK for the Model A?

I've never had a problem using my original Model A Bendix. The starter's quick rotation is what spins the Benix pinion up the helix and into engagement with the ring gear. As soon as the engine starts, it greater speed send the pinion back on the helix and out of engagement.

The next time you have a starter drive jam, try pushing the car forward in high gear. That should spin the pinion rearward.
