Starter help

Hi all,
My '28 A currently has an Abell starter and I am running it on 12v. The flywheel is the early type (not reduced diameter) with a multi-plate clutch. In order to preserve the starter drive and 1/2" shaft, I would like to replace it with another starter motor I have that has a 5/8" shaft. To this I'd like to fit a modern style drive.
Can this be done with the existing flywheel and ring gear?
I've seen other threads warn that the shaft spring bolt head will foul with the flywheel when using the bendix type.

I look forward to all replies to this question.

Re: Starter help

That is the current info. I have not tried the larger shaft starter in my multi-plate for fear of damaging the starter drive or messing up the ring gear. The flywheel can be cut down to make room for the larger drive but this is a task for someone with the capabilities and equipment. How's the old Abel drive coping with the 12 volts?

Re: Starter help

Thanks for your reply FIV. The Abell occasionally remained engaged, but a heavy duty bendix spring (unknown make) fitted to the switch as a resistor seems to have solved that. Now it occasionally doesn't engage, just makes a whirring sound. Otherwise so far so good.
Does the modern style drive suffer the same fit problem as the bendix type?
