New member intro and a question about mirrors
 

Greetings everyone,
I am in the boonies of north Georgia and recently found a pretty nice and mostly original '39 Standard sedan. This looks like a good place to find help with minor to major repairs. I'll try to not ask too many questions, mostly just the dumb ones!!
My opening question is how to get the door hinge pins out to install a mirror on the passenger side to match the driver side. Does anyone have a good technique for getting the original pin out and the new pin in?

I believe many folks on the Fordbarn have reported that nothing is gained by installing a mirror on the pass. side. Do a SEARCH. You may just be opening a can of worms.

As Fordy points out the passenger side mirror is almost useless. If you do want to install one I have had success with the correct size punch and penetrating oil. I will admit that sometimes they can be a real pain.

I have no experience with adding one... but my 1941 does not have one and I do not feel that it is a hindrance on safe driving. Remember most cars of this era had NO side view mirrors and the drivers used only the rear view and looked over the shoulder. The massive windows were good for something!

Welcome to the Barn, you have a great looking sedan. I have used the Bob Drake tool with success removing hinge pins, but it will chip the paint some. I would not attempt to remove the hinge pins on such a beautiful looking car. I do not have any experience with how effective a right hand hinge pin mirror would be.

I had stock cowl mirror on our '41 and it vibrated so bad it was useless. I agree P.S. mirrors are also useless except for a passenger. I ended up with 4" peep morrors on the top of the doors. was a great improvement for me driving, but still P.S. was a problem

My car is a 36 sedan. I installed a mirror on driver side (hinge pin type) and no pbms. Passenger side is a different story. I finally installed a peep mirror with a long arm to the mirror itself. It works for me because i can adjust the seat back far enough, but for my daughter who is shorter and has to have the seat pulled more forward, the mirror is useless. The "post" to the right of the windshield and in front of the door gets in the way.

Thanks everyone for the replies and the hints on posting pics. I may have a passenger side hinge mount mirror for sale. I really don't want to mess up the paint any more than it already is. The pin in the driver side mirror mount is not down all the way, so the mirror is loose. Guess I'll just have to try to beat it in the rest of the way.

That is a great looking car, should be fun driving it.
I personally like the look of matched hinge pin mirrors, but agree the passenger side one isn't worth the work to install, possibly with the exception that you are repainting the car. I bet very few cars were sold new with passenger side mirrors.

I love my passenger side mirror, especially when I am backing out of the garage. I tried that c-clamp thing from Drake, it makes a great paper weight. Burt's Model A sells ($50 when I bought it) a much better clamp that does press the pin out without hurting anything. The only change I made was longer bolts and for the push pin, I drilled the set hole out and use the shank off of 1/4 inch bolts.

I use my passenger side mirror all the time but I added a stick-on convex mirror to it. That made a huge difference. I can see the edge of the road and cars in the right lane.

Ron - Greetings from the Low Country of Georgia and thanks for starting this thread. I have owned a 1939 Convertible for only 4 months and I too want a Passenger side mirror. There are times when needed IMO. I have tried PB Blaster and a 4-Lb hammer and it has gotten the grooved portion out of the top of the hinge but I can't get it any further. Persistence is my middle name and I will keep trying as well as use the Tom Sawyer approach when I have a friend over! The top pin on the driver's side door hinge is not a Pin at all but rather a long screw that is not quite long enough, so another shorter screw was inserted by me from the bottom to keep the bottom of the mirror bracket from swinging out when I tighten the set screw, which came with my Dennis Carpenter mirrors. My car came with no side mirrors and with the top up, which I admit is rare, a passenger or a passenger side mirror is almost a necessity. PM if you find success and I will also keep trying. PS I haven't tried it with the door "open" and someone pushing or lifting on the door to take the weight off of the pin. With the door "closed" it might put the pin in a bind. It went in, it will come out!


And you are correct that these folks on this forum have a ton of experience and they are eager and willing to share.
