Fuel filter placement Installing a new electric fuel pump and fuel line on a street rod. Pump comes with a course mesh pre-filter/screen. Now the question is, where to install the post-pump fine mesh filter?
Existing filter was is the frame rail near the fire wall, but that is a difficult-to-get-to location on this lowered car. I don't want to see it in the engine compartment. A good, easy-access location would be with the pump, on the cross member in front of the tank. Any reason why the filter shouldn't be mounted at the back of the car, right ahead of the pump? I will flush the line at the carb one time to clear any particles introduced with the work. |

Re: Fuel filter placement Jay, your plan of the fine mesh filter mounted after the pump at the rear of the car is just fine. Although ideally the final filter is right at the carb,this stuff we do requires some departure from "ideal" in order to make everything like we want. Use good plumbing and flush it before putting in service and all will be well.

Re: Fuel filter placement Wherever you put it, it needs to be encased. There was a video on this forum where a guy had a 40 blow a rear tire and took out the exposed fuel filter, then caught fire and destroyed the car. Mine is exposed in the rear but I plan to encase it. Modern cars always have them protected. A rock could do the same thing.

Here are pictures of how I configured the electric pump/filters on my '48. I still need to add a shutoff valve before the filter/pump. Used Earl's Vapor Guard hose and clamps for the soft lines.

Re: Fuel filter placement Electric inline fuel pumps should have a course (+/-100 micron) filter before and a finer +/-40 micron after and close to the engine. There are many billet aluminum reusable filters with cleanable SS filter screens available today that eliminate any worry about glass, plastic or cheap metal construction, and alcohol fuels. My choice is Holley/Earls. They come in several sizes, colors and fitting configurations. A bit pricey, but you never have to replace them, and you can easily keep track of any dirt/foreign material that enters your system.
I use a shut off valve at the tank, then a 100 m filter, pump, and 40 m filter near the carb(s). |
Re: Fuel filter placement I stand corrected, it was the fuel filler tube. But the same thing can easily happen to the filter. On my two 97 T Birds and my 2015 Challenger, the filters are well protected from debris which could cause a fire.
