36 rear drum

Any ideas how to remove 36 rear drum without the special puller??

I have heard that you can loosen the axle nut a turn or two, and then drive around in some vigorous "figure eights".

This is NOT recommended; the best way is to buy, borrow or steal a proper puller. However, I can remember being young and broke and doing whatever it took.

Remember that pullers are cheap when compared with replacing an axle. VanPelt rents them but I am not sure if he deals with Canada, http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...ls_forsale.htm
Check with local Model A and early V8 Ford clubs (same puller) to see if they have one to loan. Check with local auto parts stores and see if they have one to loan. If they do have one it probably will not be the correct type but might work is the drums are relatively loose. Good luck.

I have had trouble with that type on drums that were really stuck. I would look for a reproduction KR Wilson puller but there are a couple of other well made ones out there.

I have had success removing my 32 rear hub by having a buddy hold a 10 lb. sledge hammer against one side of the hub shaft and I hit the other side with another 10 lb. sledge. This method worked for one side only. The other side, I had to borrow the special puller. Good Luck!

That type puller might work okay on drums that are not locked tightly on axle, but it will not work too well on really tight fitting parts. The original or reproduction KRW is the best. There's another one on the market today that looks and works like KRW. I'll try to post some pictures of this one later today.

Check this out. I have used it for years without a problem. Expensive, but cheap compared to replacing an axle. Vintage hub remover:

Re: 36 rear drum

I have a Vintage Precision puller and it works very well.

If you have a new to you vehicle and take your heavy duty proper design puller to it and the hub comes away with hardly any turns on the screw, that is when one of the other methods for pulling the hub would have worked. sledgehammer on the nut, doing donuts etc. If the hub nut has been kept very tight, like it should always be, then ONLY a correctly designed puller will get the hub off.

In other words you need the correct type puller because while in your ownership the hubs will always be very tight and no other method will work.

Mart.

That's exactly correct Mart, and that Vintage Precision Puller is as good as the original style KRW puller IMO.

That's definitely a good one, and maybe the only repro of the original KRW that's currently being manufactured.
