Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons Has anyone attempted to use the scroll window handles and the escutcheons sold by Brattons? The handles are too big for the hole in the escutcheon.
I called them and they told me they are aware of this. Furthermore, they're not sure which part is incorrect. All they could say is that based on the source of each part (handles-China, escutcheons-A&L) the diameter of the handle is likely the problem. Seems to me the fitment would have been noted in the catalog. I sure wish I had known this before having the handles nickel plated. |

Wonder if you cross drill a piece of key stock for the pin and then shave down the handle barrel. The rest of the handle may be in the way.
I have a friend who is a retired tool and die maker with a nice shop. Time to pay him a visit. Turning it down would require removing the chrome under the nickel exposing bare metal. The cost of having them nickel plated again is minimal. The second picture shows the furthest the handle will go into the escutcheon. |
Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons The area of the handle, if turned down and under the escutcheons would not be visible. Would you really need to replace them?
|
Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons Is it the plating that made it too large to fit the escutcheon?
|
Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons I would not replace the handles just have these replated. I was just anticipating the possibilty that visible areas of the handle may get scratched in this process and to a lesser degree rust of the bare metal. Besides, no more than $10 to have both butler plated again.

No. Brattons confirmed that off their shelf they do not fit. The butler nickel is pretty much gossamer plating and this problem is way more than that. |

"Will only work with original handles. Current reproductions are too large to fit into this escutcheon." No idea when they added that, though. Could've been yesterday. And apparently not in the print catalog. |

Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons If you are careful the handle parts that are visible won't get scratched or damaged. BTW who is doing the plating so reasonably?

Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons Sometimes it helps to sleep on situations.
It occurred to me that rather than making the oversize China handle fit the correct size U.S. escutcheon, I will just get a pair of China escutcheons (which do fit the China handles) and butler plate them. The stamping is not as crisp as the U.S. ones but really not noticable. Much simpler solution to the problem and a heads-up to any of you. |
Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons I will say, I had to replace a couple of my scroll window riser handles and the quality of the new ones is far, far superior to the old ones that broke on me. They were paper thin vintique repros. I'm frankly amazed they worked at all before they snapped.

Oh well, lesson learned and moving on to the next hurdle whatever that might be. |

Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons I can't speak for the originals but I don't think mine have that ridge. I've also never seen that before. I can check later today. I bought a couple repros a few years ago now so it was probably a different batch.

Also attached here is a picture of the door latch handles I ordered at the same time. They have a soft raised area with a taper. They certainly don't match the window handles. Are they closer to original or am I going to be even more upset? |
Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons I'll have to take a good look at mine when I get home. Mine also might not be the one to base anything off of since they are probably a mismatched set of repro parts. I'm pretty sure the ones I got came from Snyders in 2015.

Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons I just spoke with Snyders. They indicated their window handle does "not look exactly like the picture [on their website] and it does have the vein down the middle."
Disappointing about the part but kudos to them for being pleasant and helpful. |
Re: Window Riser Handles and "Show Quality" Nickel Plated Escutcheons Does anyone have a picture(s) of an original scroll handle to post?
Thanks |
