40 Ford 1/2 ton pick up trans removal.

My truck is in serious need of a clutch replacement and a tranny rebuild. I've read up on a couple of options one: remove engine and two: Roll rearend assembly back. I'm leaning towards option one but I've heard it through a rumor mill that the trans can be removed through the floor. Any truth to it ?

I prefer to roll the rear chassis back a few inches. Much easier in my opinion.
However, if the flywheel needs to be surfaced, it's easier in the long run, to remove the engine as you must remove the oil pan to remove the flywheel.

On my 52, the 4 speed came out through cab by hand, and back in,, with assistance of engine crane.

You can remove the transmission through the floor but you will still need to roll back the rear end so you can disconnect the torque tube and pull the transmission back. Also if you need to resurface the flywheel you will need to pull the engine pan to get it out so pulling the motor may be the best way to go. (If your lucky enough to have a truck pan with the removable lower cover you don't have to pull the pan.)

Probably going to go with removing the engine.

I did a clutch replacement last year on the avatar pickup. The trans can be removed from the floor access. The rear end and drive shaft has to be move back about 6" so you have enough room to pull the trans back and out. Disconnect the brake line, e brake cable and speedo cable. Unbolt the spring at the cross member and disconnect the shocks. Jack it up high enough for the spring to clear the gas tank while supporting the frame with stands. Support the rear of the engine with a jack so you can take the weight of the rear trans biscuits. Remove those and the clutch linkage. its also easier to remove the shifter tower. Unbolt the trans from the bellhousing and lift it though the floor. I was lucky enough to not need the flywheel resurfaced. i was able to clean the surface of the flywheel with a vibrating sander. If the flywheel needs to come off you will need to somehow hang the hang the back of the engine. I have had the pan off mine without needing to pull the engine.

V8Coopman, Would those have been on Tonner and larger trucks?

I can't honestly tell you what their original applications were. Always heard them referred-to as "big truck". They are few and far-between now-a-days. DD
