'40 Steering Lock Disassembly Follow Up? Eight years ago Ken/Alabama posted disassembly instructions for the '40. Now having failed to remove the bolt a few times two things are yet to be tried. On instruction 3, is it a must to remove the switch plate? I've been holding off on that trying to preserve the original plate. Secondly, what's holding the bolt from sliding inward as stated in instruction 6.? There is a pressed in pin visible from the back that I suspect. Any thoughts? Thanks Fred A

The switch pin should removed from the earlier model columns where the pin is staked into the lock bolt (this early designs moving the the thumb pad rotates the bolt thus the switch pin moves the swiitch contact).This design the switch pin must be pulled to move the bolt. About 37 ? the design changed to a nonrotating lockbolt . The switch pin on these is part of the floating toggle ring assembly with the thumbpad spline out the top and switch pin on bottom to the switch contact .Do not take this factory 3 part switch ring assemby apart. It lifts out of the column drop window (whole) when the lockbolt is pushed into the drop mast tube space. Hope this helps .Pictures are someplace. Re: '40 Steering Lock Disassembly Follow Up? My head is spinning with the terminology of the parts. Gene is covering the full '32 to '47 range while I'm focused on the '40. Ken mentioned the cap and it is removed. One candidate lock is off of the mast (tube) and the cap is off but if I don't figure it out otherwise may carefully mask the switch plate and put it together after a careful lube. I have other units in various states of disassembly. Other partsers were dissected with the aid of a hacksaw, in an effort to understand. Hard way to go. Thanks: Fred A

Your lock bolt has a keyway that runs in a guide pin you spotted. There also is a block bar across the keyway that blocks the bolt from moving inward till the guide pin is drilled tapped and pulled. The pin and keyway is much smaller than the pin you see from the bottom. Looks like Ken was able to disassemble with out pulling the guidepin. You are correct. I didn’t remove the guide pin. I’ve disassembled a few 40 lock assemblies and a couple 39 Zephyr lock assemblies and never removed the guide pin. I’ve been asked to repost the instructions I posted years ago so here they are.
