1940 Brake Drums

2 Attachment(s)
Can someone help me decipher the year differences between these two rear brake drums I have on my ‘36 pickup project? My pickup came with two different rear drums and I need to find a match for either one, preferably the style in my first picture. The other style I have has some good pitting so I’d prefer to not use it. Also, If anybody knows of a good source to find a good drum or two, please let me know.

Thanks for the help.

Both 40/41, the smoother one MAY be aftermarket replacement.

I've always believed what Mart says here to be factual, although the SMOOTHE drum MAY be original from another supplier, or possibly an "across-the-counter" Ford replacement. If you look inside that smoothe drum on the flange, you will likely find the "01A-1115-A2" just like the fluted-drum flange has....just like Ford did it! If it has the "-A2", that signifies either an update from Ford, or a different supplier. Please let us know if there is a number forged into that flange. Definitely both '40/'41! DD

I believe the drums in the first picture are original Ford, but I will pull one off this weekend and see if I can locate a part number. Thank you for your input.

Yeah, I was repeating something mentioned earlier. hence emphasising then MAY. MAY also both be original fitment, though. They're all interchangeable.

MT car products have good brake drums as a replacement.

OldGold .....Like I alluded to previously, I had wondered for many years what the REAL answer was on the difference between these two commonly-seen brake drums usually found on '40 and '41 Fords. Well, I did some serious digging for answers this week and I believe I have found a conclusive answer. I have finally been given to understand (on credible authority) that BOTH of these drum designs were installed on the assembly lines, and that either drum type will be recognized as authentic on an EV8 Ford Club judging field. Sorry for the confusion earlier in this thread. DD

Thanks for the clarification, DD. I'll reprogram the memory banks.

Thank you, and no problem at all. I appreciate the help. Now I just need to find one so that I’ll have a matching pair. I prefer the style of drum that is in the first picture I posted. Both of my front are the same and I prefer for them all to match. Anybody have one that they’ll sell or trade? Thanks again for the help.
