Anyone have experience with souping up one of these motors. How do they perform?

Ford Barn member "toby" has experience with some parts for the 226H for more performance. You can send him a PM and see. Pretty sure any performance parts are very rare, and very expensive when you find them. I remember Toby ,mentioning an aluminum head for one on EBAY with an asking price of $5000.

I have 226 that came out of a ‘50 Ford coupe.
I rebuilt it completely but the cam grinder messed up the lifters so I couldn’t use it.
I have since found a spare engine and now have a set of good lifters.
I no longer have a use for the engine and would like to sell it.
They are very difficult to get most parts for and six cylinder cam followers (lifters) are impossible to find new.
And don’t suggest the V8 lifters will work. They won’t.

I had a stock 226 in a 50 2 door sedan with o/d trans. Rebuilt .o3o bore, minor shave on the head.
It beat a v8 or two.
They are good engines.

The one I have seems to have plenty of torque. Have not yet taken on the highway.
I have heard that they will wind out at about 50mph

There also is the 254" M' series truck 6 [49-51] that shares most parts except block. Little red/white book Hot Rodding Ford V8] by California Bill has a chapter on them. Newc

I also think they are great engines. In '58, my best friend, had a '50 Ford with one. I was with him, a few times, when we beat V8's.

In stock form, they are actually detuned and make their torque at 1200 rpm vs 1800 for the V8. I believe that with a modern cam, they would always beat stok 239 V8's.

I also think the 254, truck engine, would stay right with the 255 Merc. They have a better cam, as the torque peaks at 1400 rpm, on those engines.

I still see F4 and larger trucks for sell, in my area. Find one with a 6 and you've probably got a 254.

Parts are a problem though.

I have a 3 carb manifold with Schieblers and a Mallory for this engine and a truck exhaust manifold I had planned on splitting with a passenger car manifold to create a dual exhaust setup. Probably be good to find a cam that would be good for the street.I understand the rear end may be geared a little lower in the 6 cyl.

There are two forums that come to mind in regards to a 240 six. Ford Truck Enthusiasts (FTE) and there is a forum strictly dedicated to the ford six cylinder engines (Fordsix). They should come up in a search.
