Cotter pin tool

We have seen these here on the 'barn. Some made the tool to help set cotter pins, some bought them. You look at it and say ok big deal, I've bent thousands of cotter/split pins without such a tool (at least I have).

Well, I had a few bucks to go for a discount and I bought this one.

Holy crap how did I every do without one. OMG it is a breeze to set them on the roller pins, shaft pins, and the like.

Thanks for the positive comment Mike, that tool is my original design and was first written up in The Model A News. About 6 or so of my creations are currently carried by most Model A suppliers. Rainmaker Ron

OK, simple but effective - just the way I like things. Might make one later today to add to my ever growing pile of home made Model A tools.

Re: Cotter pin tool

I still don't see how it splits the cotter pin. Can some show a slide-by-slide progression on how it works?

Re: Cotter pin tool

Redbird,
It just holds the head of the pin, while you bend & trim the ends. It's very KIND to OLD fingers!

I'm not Ron, but one excellent tool I think Ron created was the head puller, which really works to remove stuck heads.

As Tom Wesenberg mentioned, both the head puller and distributor puller are from my 1982 design. The jeweled headlight and cowl light visors seen all over the world are my product. The stainless steel flag holder clip secured by the bumper clamp is my design as is the radiator quail flag holder. The latest product is a combination head and distributor puller marketed exclusively by Snyders. see page A 121 of the 2016 catalog. I could relate the history of the leakless water pump nut and electric gas valve kit but that is another story.

Hey Bill,
Sadly the local hardware types of stores are all now selling the China made cotter pins. They are so not carbon steel! More like aluminum or tin...but they all do come in a nice plastic tackle box to justify the cost. :D

Corporate retail America probably did this for us old guys so that you could now have a small child bend the cotter pins over easily with their fingers. Also no cotter pin tool then required. Sorry Ron. It is much easier to have a small child work on your brake rods then us all sliding under the car

Seriously though, please everyone get some good high quality industrial quality cotter pins for your A as your life may depend on them!!!

Carl,
We all better stock up on the USA made hardware while we can.

Rockford, IL used to be the automotive, machine screw, and fastener capital of the world and they just lost their last main plant to China competition.
