37 steering box
 

Installing a 37 steering box in a 35 coupe. when using the 35 mount which hole gets redrilled. the top slide hole or the bottom round hole? I have a 37 mount but think it be easier using the 35 mount with the car all together

I've not done it, but I think there are 3 holes, two of which line up. It might be that it will become obvious once offered into place.

Maybe???

Hopefully the motor is removed. The 2 upper most holes line up and column and tube
with the drop end where they belong with a tiny bit of bind which can be massaged
away. The lower ear extends below the '35 mount. With care and some finesse I

drilled thru the lower ear into the mount...lots of ear to work with. I did hold off drilling the third hole until everything was lined up just right.

I redrilled the top ear and mount. Had to massage the left center tube on my Reds header. Have an S10 trans with Chassis Eng'g x member plates. Maybe Charlie NY method I wouldn't have to massage the header.

Drezin, The info I gave you is relevant to RHD 35-36. Virtually a direct bolt in... I understand, from reading other threads on here, that with LHD configured cars, fitting a 37-39 s/box into a 35-36 using the original mounting plate, that there may be interference between s/box and exhaust manifold. I understand that with LHD vehicles, you're better off to use the 37-39 steering box mounting plate. Requires drilling out three rivets and dealing with one spot weld to remove original plate.

drezin .....Maybe these pictures of the '35-'36 frame bracket (dark & rusty), as compared with the '40 frame bracket (light colored/clean) will give you a better guide as to what is what. Hopefully, the tape dimensions will help a little, too. DD

Coopmans excellent show and tell illustrates the reason why I added the lower hole
in my steering box.

We tried every and all the modifications, both suggested here and elsewhere, to fit a '37-'39 steering box into a left hand drive '36 Phaeton about 10 yrs ago, while trying to use the stock '35-'36 frame mounting bracket. No matter what we tried, we could not prevent steering box interference with exhaust manifold. We looked at raising the engine and grinding material from steering and manifold. None of these modifications would have allowed enough clearance. The final aproach was to remove the stock mounting bracket by removing four rivets and one spot weld (a major pita with engine in place!!), and installed a '37-'40 steering box mounting bracket. Once this bracket was bolted in place, everything else on the steering column bolted back in place and looked as if it had come from the factory this way.

#9....John, it's called Kentucky windage. I cannot imagine doing that job with the motor in place. With no motor in the way I could squat right in front of the steering gear while
Alice was in the drivers seat yelling at me. Which does bring something else to my recall
I did use an approx 1/8" shim between the drop and the dash.

Thanks everyone, looks like I better wait till next winter to change over. Better drive it for now
