ZZ-Top Strips Gone after 10 Years

3 Attachment(s)
I thought I would post how to:
This isn’t anything new but over the weekend I removed some very much needed striping from my 39' five window...
Technical:
Before and After photo of the car below. Easy Off oven cleaner was used to remove the strips that have been on the car for 10 plus years. Mask off chrome and clean up well with water base cleaner after strips are removed. My car had clear coat over base color and believe could be an issue if you don’t have clear coat. Simply spray on area and time for 5 minutes, wipe off and repeat if necessary. Wet Sand with 1500 with water in area that require, followed by light white polishing compound.

Looks much better, but using OVEN CLEANER scares me.

I've done it in a somewhat similar fashion, except for the SPRAYING-on part. First of all, the YELLOW can is the one to use (not the black can). I use a wet (dip in water, first) Q-TIP which I then dip into a small container which I've sprayed a small amount of the can's contents into. Wipe the pin-striped line with a dampened (with water) cloth. Then, paint the portion of pin-stripe line that you want to remove. Like said above, wait about five minutes, then wipe thoroughly with a wet rag to remove the line of pin-stripe. No overspray mess to deal with. ALWAYS try a test on an obscure portion of your paint to make sure there will be no ill effects on your paint BEFORE attempting the main mission. DD

Some colors are harder to remore than others (red) and also after the stripes or lettering are removed you will see the ghost in the paint - color sanding and/or rubbing compound will take care of this

Hey Step-down,
Thanks for the pics/instructions! Great job also.
That stuff is really good for a lot of uses! One cavaet tho...wear some breathing protection when spraying. One whiff of that stuff will definitely get your attention..to not do that again.

What about heat from a hair dryer or other type-I hate when car dealers put their emblem on my cars. I don't want to be a rolling bill board for them without re-imbursement. I use a hair dryer to peal them off-always seem to come off easily.

From ZZ top to top of the class. A lot of those 80's & 90's styling cues don't date well.

1937 PU ....Heat gun works great ...I've used that method on vinyl ....My application was painted on with one shot some time ago.
V8CM brings up a good point beware of the overspray and clean/clean up the overspray or be neat .....

And all this time I've been trying to save a ZZ TOP bumper sticker on my 51 Prefect. I must be old school.
