'40 Ford Doorstop

Here is a photo of the door stop (strap) for my '40 pickup. Most of these are mangled beyond recognition, but this one is fairly nice. There are rivets on the inner support piece above and below the hole. What was the purpose of these rivets? If that are to hold a reinforcement or something on, they are long gone from every door I've looked at. If you have a photo of what is supposed to be there, I would like to see it.
Thanks,
Larry Young

I think the rivets secured some anti rattle material.

What looks strange to me is why the hole is so large when only a thin metal piece needs to slide through. Surely, whatever was there was to help prevent the metal from being mangled. No one has seen an original unmanned door?
