6v jumper pack

Well This past Sunday was a rainy day up here in the northeast. Never letting a day go by without accomplishing anything, I decided to build a jumper pack for 6Volt. I have four 6v cars and on occasion a 6v jump is needed. Also nice security when on the road is something goes wrong I can at least try to get to a safe port. Using a Optima 6 Volt battery (expensive) but worth the price in my view I get about ten years out of them. I built this box carrier, it's safe to carry around in you vehicle and give plenty of cranking amps for a jump start. Used some scrap plywood and a one " dowel. Found a can of red paint to top it off. I had a few old 12v packs so I cut off the wires and used two battery post connectors (cheap). I'm thinking to share this as it may be of interest to others. It took about one hour to put together. there is one screw holding the dowel in place should you desire to remove the battery. Just remove the screw push the dowel aside and you can just pop out the battery.

Great idea. I like it, and the red paint is a perfect color for it.
Even the dowel ends to hold the clamps couldn't be improved on.:)

Tom the nice thing about this it's safe to carry around in your vehicle, I have had some bad experiences, jumping a 6 Volt with twelve volts, even if you go directly to the starter, depending on how the receiver vehicle is wired, it takes little to fry a circuit, or ignition system. Ask me how I know!!! LOL

Great idea. Only one thing concerns me though...Secure it well when transporting so it will not tip over when in the car. The two post clamps could short against the metal of the car. You have enough current there to create a pretty good DC arc welder.
Good Day!

For those of you that are not acquainted with the Optima spiral wound battery, they can be laid down , upside down, or right side up, they are sealed and don't require any special orientation.

You could always put a top over the battery, if this concerns you.

Re: 6v jumper pack

I wonder if an Optima would fit in a Harbor Freight .50 Caliber plastic Ammo Box?
THAT would be even easier for those of us who are not woodsmiths.
Keep the jumpers separate.
UPDATE
IXNAY on the HF .50 cal box
OPTIMA 6V is 9.9"X3.4"X7.8"
.50 cal HF METAL Ammo Box is 11 .1"X5.5"X6.9"

Very good idea.....well thought out. How long are the cables? My only other thought is you can but a fairly decent portable battery jumper for around 100.00 and a cheepe for around 60 or 70 that has a light and a mini compressor. None the less, I appreciate the thought and the time put into the one you made. Thanks for sharing.

That's great. Just a short time ago I searched for a commercially available 6v jump pack. The only one I could find was only available and Europe and crazy expensive...even before the shipping charge.

The only thing that I might add is some sort of disconnect or shut off switch.

Thanks for sharing.

But not 6 volts. At least not that I could find in the US. I did find some sold in China and Europe. If you know of some please show us.

Those ordinary jumper packs just have a small lead/acid battery, so they have much less power and don't last very long. My neighbor went through 3 of them because he left them pugged in to recharge and all the water was evaporated from the small battery. The local recycling place has a large battery container full of those jumper packs.

The one Frank made is much better, and it's 6 volts.

Re: 6v jumper pack

My mistake. Every old car I ever owned I converted to 12V negative ground so I had 12V on the brain. I forgot a lot of guys keep the 6V system. Although, I never had a problem running the starter on 12V including the three As I have now.

Great Idea, just a thought...I would add a battery tender lead to the battery... Easy charging and it would always be ready to go....

Re: 6v jumper pack

FRANK's got a good idea and the only improvement that it needs is maybe a disconnect switch of some kind.

How 'bout adding a plug to connect to the car charging system to charge the jumper pack as you drive and a voltmeter and a Maxi Fuse/Ciruit Breaker and a ....:rolleyes:
