Broken bendix bolt Knew this might be a challenge. Went fishing for the head with a flexible magnet wit no success. Was going to stick a magnet on the flywheel but discovered the flywheel locks up immediately. I can turn the flywheel backwards with no problem. As soon as I crank it normally, it locks up.
If I drop the radius ball, will it give me access to the bottom? Thanks, Bob Giles |

Dropping the radius ball will give a little access..., but it's much further back than the flywheel, more under the clutch release shaft.
Would a dab of something really sticky...maybe wheel bearing grease?...on the flywheel maybe stick to and pick up the bolt head as you turn the flywheel? Attached is a picture of a 4-speed clutch housing. But you can see the radius ball hole is not very large.... |
Re: Broken bendix bolt I got it. I tried the grease. It didn’t pick it up but it must have moved it enough that the magnet found it. After talking with Snyder’s, I ordered the new style bendix, American made. I found that it’s a little bit bigger in diameter and won’t go in without removing the block water neck.

Re: Broken bendix bolt Well, glad you got the bolt....
Model A's are a little like life, one darn thing after another.....but worth it!! That oversize bendix has come up before.....seems there is a trick to getting it in...I'm sure you have tilted it every which way.... Maybe the trick was removing the water inlet elbow...:) |
Re: Broken bendix bolt Reminds me, unbolted the water pump from the generator on an OOOLD Rambler. Couldn't get it out, then it MYSTERIOUSLY fell out????---I almost NEVER got that Dude back in!!!
