1940 Sedan Steering Box Removal

I’ve done a search but couldn’t find my answer. I’m going to remove my steering box from my 40 Sedan. I have the car on a lift so I have plenty of room to drop the box out the bottom. Can this be accomplished leaving the column tube installed in the car and remove the steering wheel, unbolt box from the frame and drop straight out the bottom leaving floorboards and everything else untouched.

I've never attempted to remove the gear unit the way you are contemplating. Methinks the angle of the tube vs. the necessary angle of the gear unit (to remove) will not allow this to happen. Perhaps if you unbolt the column from the instrument panel???
If I am correct in that angle will be too severe, you'll also need to remove the shift rods from the arms.

I’m thinking the angle might hamper the removal also. Shift rods won’t be an issue because I’ve installed a 39 floor shift transmission and have removed all the column shift hardware.

With everything removed from the column, unbolting it should be the easiest part.

Just trying to keep from pulling floor board, wiring etc if not needed.

The fasteners for the column drop may be interesting to remove.
One or more of them have a head that shears off when tightened.
I used my cell phone to take a picture of the fasteners from the top..
I used a short hacksaw blade to put a groove in the the top of the bolt.
Then i used a screwdriver to remove the bolt with the missing head.
This is not as confusing as it sounds
