48 Deck Lid Emblem
 

Does anyone know how the original Ford emblem on the 47-48 deck lid is made? I have a repop that is attached with clips fastened to the emblem with JB weld or something similar. It doesn't conform well to the contour of the trunk lid and when it is snugged down the clips keep breaking loose from the emblem. I have refastened them numerous times and they separate when tightened.

I am wondering if the original was a casting or stamping like this repop. This new emblem is thin stamped stainless, I imagine if the clips were welded to the emblem it would discolor from the heat. Any suggestions?

The original was stamper SS, the clips were soldered on from factory or welded. They always came off seen many trunks with the three clips bolted in place and emblem missing.normally they fit the contour without a lot of pressure on the clips. Bought a repro from Drake, lousy fit so I polished up the old one epoxied the clips and put it back on.

This repro came in the box with one of the clips broken off. When I called they said to JB weld it. For a hundred bucks I expected better.

I have one to do as well, my plan was to silver solder it, then re-polish the stainless afterwards.

I bought one for my 48 Coupe. Center stud is shorter than the original and you don't want to over tighten the nuts. Have a friend that started in a Ford dealer bodyshop in 1949 and he said it wasn't unusual for them to come unattached from the clips when the cars were fairly new.

I had the same problem. Eventually replaced it after many failed attempts to "glue" it together. When I installed the latest new one, I only snugged them down hand tight. Curvature fit not the best, but I "don't see it" anymore. The only problem that I haven't been able to fix is that water leaks past the threads into the trunk.

Rick, I used bodyshop string caulk around the studs and it worked fairly well. Couldn't get the nut on the center stud as it was about a 1/4 too short.

Go check the V8 want ads...I believe there's a real 6A stainless one on there now.
